I would like to install a Porshe 911 drive train, and suspension in my '04 Tacoma. I love my truck, except for the power and handling. I live in the middle of a bunch of twistys in the back country and want a major upgrade. Anybody tried this, or know of someone who has?

    thanks, Mike

Like a Porsche 911? I'm sure it's possible but for the amount of money you're going to end up spending you might as just buy a second hand 911 and use your Taco as a daily driver.

Yes Joe, I have a little money , time (retired and bored) and a welding/machine shop in the back yard. I want rear engine traction, and something different

Hmmm, well I guess on second thought the Pikes Peak Tacoma was mid-engined and you could probably accomplish the 911 drive train by doing a full tube chassis and then just putting the Tacoma over it. I've seen a couple drift trucks setup this way around the Internet, so at least that's possible.

I wish you luck though, if you can figure out how to do it, it would be pretty awesome.

Also, this is a mini truck that's been done up for show, but they managed to put a 2.8L VW motor in the back of a Toyota Truck

I think you're going about this the wrong way. Supercharge your existing engine, rebuild your suspension, either slam it or lift it. Have lots of fun and something still able to be driven and with money left in your pocket.

Just make sure that you pay attention to the weight down on the front axle. Remember that Tacoma is laid out with the assumption that you have several hundred pounds of engine sitting on the front wheels for steering and braking.

I would hate to see you go to a whole heck of a lot of work, only to find that the thing wants to do wheelies, can't hold a corner, and won't stop.

So If I want to upgrade my suspension, but not lift it, who sells the parts? And then an upgrade on HP? Might make more sense than "building" a new Toy

So I'll weigh in here as a person who has raced and worked on Porsche 911's for the past 17 years.
    1. If you decide to go with an air cooled engine(3.6L code 62P00001 or higher as these have the better cylinder base gasket seal setup), make sure you have enought cool air flowing to the engine. You might also want to run the 964 cup oil cooler setup as well. This is what I have in my car and it works really well but bear in mind oil changes will be ~12-14 quarts.
    2. If you go with a water cooled engine, you will need to plumb in a radiator.
    3. Shifter linkage is going to be a real challenge, these cars are pretty fussy when it comes to the linkage geometry. Many race cars have solid engine bushings to eliminate engine movement so as to improve the shifting.
    4. ECU's are prettty straightforward but make sure you read up on how to deal with the immobilizer circuit properly.
    5. Chips are available for the 3.6 series ECU's that re pre OBD from Steve Wong. He is the best.

    Good luck!

    Cheers, James
