Interesting thread. I bought a 1988 Toyota pickup brand new for $8800 and proceeded to put 335,000 miles on it using Fram filters and Castrol GTX 20w-50 oil exclusively. That truck never burned a discernible amount of oil and was rock solid until I sold it in 1997.

    Fast forward to today.

Times have changed and so has my oil strategy, but not too much. My new 2015 Taco will get it's oil changed at 5000 mile intervals with a Purolator L10241 filter and Pennzoil conventional 5w-30oil. Your Taco will last as long as you want it to on regular oil. Buy boutique synthetic oils to make you feel better, not to make your truck engine last longer.

In seven years, all this thread has taught me is that everyone is devoted to their own oil and filter, and if you dare oppose that, then you're a fucking moron and don't know what you're talking about.

    Thanks TW!

    Carry on.

mobil 1 only, every 10,000, on my 99 4runner for 17 years now, it still runs better and gets better MPG than the
first two weeks I owned it new from the dealers lot back in 1998

    Agreed.....

And.....Unless they/you're in the "OEM filter/Pennzoil (currently 5w30) group", I'm a fucking moron who's averaged over 40,000 miles a year for 40+ years without ever having an internal engine issue even on some vehicles that went over 300,000 miles and I don't know what I'm talking about......And I get what seems to be above average MPG's from my Tacoma.....

Never was one to give 2 shits what "popular opinion" says.....

    And I'm good with that!

Not the first time I've been described as a fucking moron.....

And I'm OK with THAT too, so long as I'm a fucking moron with a truck that will outlast the Energizer Bunny.

So now that we have that out of the way... What oil and filter do you use? I didn't read several hundred posts in case you've already posted it.
I do like that this is a popular thread in every single vehicle forum in existence. It gets really good in the Harley forums. LOL.

Uh.....It's in my post......OEM Toyota filter, Pennzoil 5w30 conventional......

Great gas mileage. Almost 2 million miles (documented) with Pennzoil, 81,000 of them on this truck, and NO internal engine issues. I'm golden with the current plan.

is the one you change often along with the filter

it can be nearly junk, just change it often enough

ymmv, mobil 1 is good for 10,000 miles on about any class D gasoline powered vehicle

I work on a fleet of over 140 busses and about another 100 support vehicles. Doesn't matter what motor or fuel they all get Mobil 1 turbo diesel truck oil. All oil changes get an oil sample, and never once has the oil or preventative maintence schedule failed. We run change intervals anywhere from 5,000 to 12,000 miles depending upon usage/age of engine.

Nice. Probably similar to Rotella T6 5w40...

...if that's the case, it's good. Rotella T6 can't be beat for the durability and consistency (my favorite oil). Not to mention cheap. $21.xx for a gallon (Mobil Turbo Diesel is $26.xx). Wish I could use it in my 2.7... but it requires 0w20... too much of a variance to jump to 5w40.

I doubt anyone, on TW, actually uses "diesel" oil though just because it says "diesel" on it... and it says 5w-40...

There once was a thread on oil

With information that made some’s blood boil

    The internet it did roil

Dino vs Synthetic-what a problem with no rules by Hoyle

    A thread gone too far

With followers who should be in a bar

What should I do with my car

I feel like my brains should be in a jar

    It really is bizarre

If I go long interval am I sub-par

    The beating of the gum

Only means that the gearheads will need some rum

If I use Dino will my Tacoma become a slum

If I use synthetic will my girlfriend not cum

Oh I feel so hum drum

As actually the thread is pretty dumb

Sorry, the way I interpreted the statement about oem and Pennzoil was sarcasm as that is the "latest" trend and you were actually using something else.

    Thanks

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
That's the problem I had with Mobil 1, burned through a half a quart every 3000 miles so I tried other oils. Turns out it doesn't burn any with Pennzoil Platinum in 7500 mile intervals. I am trying Amsoil now to see how it runs in my engine. I will pretty much run any of the name brand oils in my truck, but none of the store brand names like Walmart, Toyota, Essential, O'Reillys, etc mainly because I have no idea where it comes from and who makes it.

I'm sarcastic when it doesn't appear I'm being sarcastic, and straight to the facts when it does appear sarcastic.....or something like that.

It's called insanity. I caught it from my kids.....

Fact of the matter is, a good buddy is a Pennzoil distributor. I get my oils in 5 gallon pails or 55 gallon drums. And C.H.E.A.P. too. That said, I've had such a good history with Pennzoil, I'd pay full retail and be happy with that.

As for filters; I have a history with OEM Toyota on the 5 Toyota trucks I've owned. Also have plenty of history with Wix or NAPA Gold filters on a number of trucks I've ran hard in commercial service (towing overloaded trailers) . I'm happy with any of the 3. Local Toyota dealer parts dept gave me a good rate on 12 filters, so I'm good for the next 60,000 miles.
