    hello tacomaworld!
This is my first post so bare with me here.

So I have this annoying squeal from my truck and I was told it was from my timing belt. I got a quote from a shop and they said it would cost around $580 with new water pump and tensioners.

And I was wondering if it generally cost around that much or I'm getting ripped off. Thanks guys!

    Welcome to the forum.

Its costs about $180-200 for you to do it yourself like most of us here do.

That sounds better then $580 so I'll have to do that when I have the time. I would probably pick up the parts at the dealership if it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Thanks man for the link. Does it take a lot of time to do it? Is it straight forward, either way I'm going to search it up on the forum so I don't miss any steps when I'm doing it.

True but not all of us were lucky to have saved a copy... it would help out some of the newer DIYers and Tacoma owners

I count myself as one of the unlucky ones. I'll just save it to my phone so I won't lose it....

Bearings in #16, #17 (idler pulleys) or the water pump are probably going out, hence the squeal. #13 is the belt itself (~$50 OEM).
Hardest part is getting the crankshaft bolt off & knowing where the timing marks are.

    Good Luck! :)

$580 to change it out. I have done the job myself, but for that price, I wouldn't be able to write the check fast enough.

It's going to take you a whole weekend to change it. Let a pro do it in an afternoon. My weekend is worth more than saving $300. Plus you will get a warranty. No warranty if you do it yourself.

Any thing less than $600 is a steal.

Maybe if I bring in the parts I could get a better price. I know this mechanic so it shouldn't be an issue.

Food for thought, but his profitability is to some degree also in the parts.

In my business I charge far less for the same job to someone who buys a product from me because I'm making a small amount on the hardware. If someone brings me the same hardware bought elsewhere, I pretty much double my labor charge

Some mechanics won't use customer supplied parts, anyway, so I'd definitely ask before buying parts on your own.
