Actually the type of steel has less to do with the corrosion resistance than how the steel is treated. There are several pretreatment like pickeling and oil. The coating and how tough it is is a big factor to. Manufacturers do test called salt spray test where the finished part is subjected to a salt spray for a number of hours. Then is evaluated. I spent a lot of time in quality control.

And Toyota is not the only one who has had problems. My Chevy tracker had the same issue. That's why we traded it off. All Chevrolet did was replaced the crossmember under the steering rack. Toyota has been replacing complete frames, a buy back would have been cheaper.

I live in central massachusetts. Heavy, heavy salt use. My truck has almost 140,000 miles. I had the frame inspected in August 2014.
It passed with flying colors. I knew it would because i got under there and took a look. They performed the 'anti-corrosion' treatment which appears to be holding up as I looked at it last week. I do regular under carriage washes at the local car wash so I believe that helped over the years. I do it more frequently during the winter months.

40 hours of labor, 8.3 months of car rentals at $35 per day, a frame, associated parts. unless toyota is getting a massive discount on labor/car rentals, i'd say mine passed the 13K barrier. your results may very

it is nice to have a truck again. sold a treadmill and was able to deliver it. guessing my ability to deliver increased the sell ability of it.

Toyota pickup sales are slumping, The fact that the ysold enough to have market share in midsize will not change that. Overall pickup sales from Toyota are in shitz. None of the Toyota pickups broke into Top20 sales in November. So clearly there is something going on in there.

    http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2015/12/best-selling-pickup-trucks-november-2015.html

    i wouldn't call a YOY 15.4% increase in units sold a slump.

and thru november, i'd say they had a little over 50% of the midsize category (tacoma, canyon, frontier, colorado)

that said, midsize are clearly a niche when compared to the full size truck market

Tacoma did not broke even Top 20 in November, neither Tundra... That pickup news has some funky Data in there. Notice lowest in top 20 is Ford Focus but in Pickup website Tacoma has 13k + sales.
I trust WSJ more than website that cites no source of information.

So they missed the Tacoma in your WSJ chart.. That's what happened. The GM/FORD numbers from WSJ are exactly the same as the pickuptruck.com numbers. There's another post (#1683) that mentions the same November number, 13465 for Tacoma. So it appears that the Tacoma should be #20 and that the Focus should be dropped from the top 20.

Stopped by Yoda today and picked up sparkplugs & oil filter. Plugs are cheaper there than the parts store. While there checked on frame that was ordered in Aug. Frame is in, not all small parts have shown up yet....brake lines, bolts etc. So starting month 5 still waiting, still driving the Taco.

Took my '07 with 34,000 miles in for inspection in July. Was preparing for them to coat the frame but someone had posted a great picture of the drivers side inner frame by the cat with a qualifying hole. I looked at mine and was surprised to find corrosion. Rest of frame looked OK. I was expecting a fight but dealer told my frame was bad but I could continue driving until replacement arrived. Called last week for an update and my frame had just arrived. Dropping it off on 01/11 for replacement. Keeping fingers crossed. I do all my own maintenance and don't like anyone screwing with my vehicles.
I went so far has to have the inspection and repair performed at a dealer further from my residence as I didn't trust the local dealer I'd purchased from. I'm also worried about the replacement leaf springs. I had the leafs replaced when it was almost new under a TSB because they sucked. I like what I have now and will be checking ride height and quality before and after.
I bought this truck with the intent of it being the last new truck that I'd buy. Wish me luck.
And a Happy New Year to all of you!!!!!!!!!!

Just ask the dealer not to swap out your leafs. Shouldn't be an issue.
My truck got new leafs, new control arms, and new rear brake lines. Way pleased with mine.

    Good luck.

    Day 21 ...the saga continues.

I can confirm that I do indeed have the dumbest mechanics in this thread. Apparently the tech working on my truck installed the upper oil pan gasket incorrectly. He admitted this to me when I went to go see it today. What gets me is that the truck was once again in pieces. The cab was removed. Not sure why you need to remove the cab to get to the oil pan gasket?

I'm back in a Crapolla. :help:
