I still think the best magazine option is a USGI mag with a magpul follower.
-More likely to fit whatever is made to accept M16 magazines.
    -Parts
    -More likely to drop free.
    -Fit mag pouches.
-Can paint, strip, repaint, or anodize, or dry film lube.

Or you can go polymer. Free country.

    Okey-dokey. Thanks!

I have the punches and nylon hammers from doing automotive work for years, so that's not the issue. I just don't know enough about what I'm doing to be certain I'd be able to come up with an AR that would work better (or even as good as?) something that was factory built. Plus, the S&W lifetime warranty is a nice bonus. Like I said, I may build one from scratch at some point, once I get comfortable with them in general.

    Suggestions on a brand?

Great little AR you picked up.
I had never touched an AR when I built my first, it's honestly not complicated, when you decide to build (everybody does at one point) just watch a bunch of videos and it's easy.

Find a local surplus store and see if they have surplus AR mags.

Had to google that one. Thought you'd dropped something on the keyboard at first...

Probably. I made the mistake of visiting a bunch of AR forums and reading the arguments among some truly obsessed AR people and got overwhelmed, lol. I'm pretty handy mechanically, so once I'm comfortable with the function on this one I'm sure I'll end up building one.

AR fanatics are just about the worst. Overweight, middle aged dudes from the suburbs, that think they need a sooper dooper tactical rifle, to shoot a stationary target at 50 yards

When it comes to accessories such as stocks, optics, mounts, etc, it's just like any car or truck forum. URD or TRD, Method or Walker Evans, King or Icon.

The base rifle or carbine though is more along the lines of OEM Toyota vs made in China aftermarket parts from Auto Zone.

The Government owns the TDP(Technical Data Package) and only those who supply parts to the Government are truly making "Mil-Spec" parts. Colt and FN supply full weapons, then there are other manufacturers who supply parts. LMT, Precision Grinding & Manufacturing, Coronet something or another...thing is, they are allowed to manufacter parts but not sell them retail. Just like OEM parts made by Denso, NGK, etc, etc. (LMT, Denso, NGK all sell retail, just an example)

Companies have gotten copies (TDP) along the way or reverse engineered parts but may not be up to date on the current TDP as it gets ammended.
This is the main reason for all the Colt bible thumping.

Are there better parts? Sure. Would you say a King shock is better than factory Bilstein? I would, I'm biased though.

And once you do it'll get the same strangle hold of your wallet the Taco gets. They become adult Legos.

There's some irony in the fact that a company that manufactures high capacity magazines is located in a state that restricts mags to 10rds.

But you have to remember the gov will go with the cheapest option as long as it meets their requirements.

So you could have a superior product that costs more vs a cheaper product that meets the requirements of the contract. The cheaper one becomes milspec while the better one isn't

You obviously didn't offer to give them crazy taxcuts and pay them to relocate to Nevada lol
Also you probably didn't smile like a donut when asking either.
    haha
    Then again, I didn't either so...there's that.

I'd brag too, until I had to turn it back in to the armory.

Edit: Three things it could be.
    Dept owned
    SOT owned
    RDIAS <--then I'd brag.
