Good point I will ask him before I go ahead and buy the parts. I don't want to pay for labor and I don't want to hurt his business.

But thats $300 that you could keep in your pocket. Thats $300 that can be spent on more Tacoma mods.

I havent done one on this engine, but looking at it, i could probably do it in 4-5 hours if i was in the shop and on the clock. Figure its a Saturday project.

Most importantly, i dont trust anyone to work on my shit. Warranties are worthless from incompetent people, and even at dealerships, there are many incompetent people working.

I could use the money for 5100 struts so I can finally level it out... It can't be too hard. I have experience working on trucks but not a taco so it may be good to learn and save some cash.

Do you think the belt will work just by looking at it? Why would a Toyota use a Mitsubishi belt in the first place even if it was a replacement part. Just a thought.

Edit* sorry didn't see you got a Toyota belt I was referencing an earlier post. My bad.

Even if i was only saving $10, i would still do it myself rather then let some asshole work on my truck.

Also stop buying eBay kits. You have no ida where the parts are coming from. There is a huge market for knock off car parts that are put in OEM Manufacturer's boxes.

That EBAY store sells more than one kit. They vary in price and the number of items included. They also sell a 100% OEM kit. I have purchased 2 from him.

There is endless info on this timing belt job on TW.

Yeah...they could break some thing and not tell you. It's happen to me and my brother before. It sucked so bad. The mechanic got the clearance on the piston and head wrong, he didn't tell us and let's say it was not a good day.

lol people get that wrong all the time Caligula. but yes mitsuboshi does make some part for us for example, accessory belts. it is not a hard job if you do it by yourself and the plus side is saving the extra 300 bucks to do other mods. the price you listed sound about right too.

If you have the time and the tools, why not save some money and learn about your truck? :notsure: How much "time" it will cost is up to you. If you can get someone to help you, even better.

    I'll leave this here.

I have a 2004 3.4l and changed timing belt and water pump a month ago. I watched a couple of videos on youtub and did it myself. Took me 12 hours to finish.
I can give you a few advices:
    Get somebody to help you
    Get a good breaker bar
Get a torque wrench up to 250 ft lbs for the crank shaft bolt.
A big screen cellphone so you can watch the video on youtub and work at the same time.
Don't get worried if it takes two days or you get overwhelmed with all tthings you will have to unbolt, because it probably will take two days and it's overwhelming.
Be patient and keep a tow truck guy cellphone number in your pocket in case you give up.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I got quoted $275 for labor at a local shop if I provide the parts, parts cost about $240 bucks so grand total for me is $515 which isn't bad. Dealership probably charges close to $900 to have it done.

    that's a fair price (assuming 3 hours labor @ $85 hour)

what always worries me is if you feel you can trust them to do it right (use the right amount of gasket sealants, lock tight, and properly torque things and not hide things if they break something or strip threads.

what always scares me is if they snap a bolt off or strip one out and not say anything, then if you notice it later, they play dumb and try to say they didn't do it.

My first V6 Tacoma had the timing belt changed out by the dealer. That was back in 2003. The cost was $745 then. If you can get the job done now for less then $600 now, I would say you are getting a great deal.

I agree, it is a great learning experience. If you really like that kind of work and have the tools and location to do the work, then yes, save the $300. If not, then save some hassle and get it done. There is no sin on farming out some jobs. Its called the "dollar vs hassle" factor.

I trust this shop pretty well, they've had a long standing solid reputation in town for years. Plus I'm pretty good friends with the guy who owns it so I have no worries there. I feel more confident in them than any dealership to do the work.
