Someone correct me if I am wrong or haven't seen anything regarding it yet. But is Toyota ever going to develop a diesel model for the Tacoma? I know other companies have made this move to trucks like Dodge ecodiesel.

Let's hope if they do that they don't partner with VW. :)

Hate to have to tell you this, but the Ford Ecoboost is a gas engine. And the answer to your question is "probably not."

When I bought my new Taco the dealership had a new owner dinner orientation. At this dinner there was a Toyota Factory engineer present. The diesel engine question came up. The engineer stated that the information that he had stated that Toyota would NOT be going the diesel engine route, but would be more focused on hybrid/electric solutions. Upon further questioning; he also stated that the main area for diesels was in the heavy duty truck sector like the Dodge cummins and Ford and GM diesels; which Toyota has no vehicles in that designation and did not plan too in the future.

Have family that does mechanical engineering work for Toyota. She pretty much told me the same thing. Not enough money in it for Toyota. Toyota has us standing in line to buy Tacomas and the cost to retool for diesel and to train the service techs makes it a dollar loser.

Yeah I knew I would. I really was thinking about not asking but no one has really posted much on here about it so I thought sure why not ask.

You didn't do much of a search then. The "why no diesel in the Tacoma" discussion has hi-jacked many different threads. Just wait for it. LOL

I'll say the same thing I did in the other 100 diesel threads

I'd rather see a gas / electric or diesel / electric hybrid

then I'll post a video of a really fast hybrid race car later when somebody says " something something prius something mericuh "

Lets be a little clearer here.

The diesel Tacoma already exists everywhere (most everywhere?) outside of N America. It's called the Hilux.

A friend in Guatemala has one. DCSB 4wd manual, turbo and intercooled. Guess what? The intercooler is flat on top of the motor, and that Sport scoop is functional, feeding the intercooler.

So the problem isn't they won't or can't. The problem is they won't refine the product to meet N American safety and emissions criteria.

One reason is resistance to diesel in at least the US. In the rest of the world, diesel is the cheap fuel, and so it's the seller of the working class and economy minded, along with manual transmissions. Here diesel costs a lot more than gas, so it takes a big MPG boost just to break even. You know, like VW did.

Anyway, I love driving his. Both on hard road and climbing mountain trails. Low end grunt is nice off road, turbo makes it drivable in the mountains on the hard road.

Bill is correct but the Hilux isn't made in the USA primarily is because of the cost to Toyota to retool and conform.

I rented a Hilux in Honduras last time down there. 4x4. Manual. Nice truck but not as refined as my Tacoma. Would make a great off road vehicle.
