My 85 Hilux is still easy to work on... But it seldom needs anything other than oil changes

I want hubs!!!! Is there not a way to have electronic hubs? Seems like they could eek out another.5 mpg in the 4x4 if it had hubs. Also, no front diff vibes after lifting. My 86 and 96 had hubs. I really miss my first gen. I sold to a local so I have to suffer with seeing it around town occasionally. I beat the living F@$k out of that truck and it never asked for more than oil, gas, tires and shocks.

It could be done but it is cheaper to make unit bearings...

They are what just about every vehicle on the road has for front wheel hubs now.

I'd much rather have these and serviceable wheel bearings back.

Goddamn right. I got 24-26 mpg out of my '94 when summer road tripping and in the winter rolling with locked hubs the 2H/4H was instant and on demand. That lack of engagement lag saved my bacon a couple of times. I miss that truck.

Sorry, have to disagree. I was very experienced with manuals and there is no way myself or anyone else could match the shifts of an auto in heavy mud

You know what nobody has ever complained about with a manual transmission? Being in the wrong gear. Gear hunting. Over revving. Matching gears for conditions in a manual happens between the ears, not in a programmers lab at Toyota USA HQ. If YOU aren't good enough to get the job done, fine. Don't paint me with your broad brush because I know what the fuck I'm doing when behind the wheel.

Well guess what I do too. I was like you at one time until I bought an auto and realized how much better it performed especially in heavy mud and sand which was the bulk of my 4 wheeling. Fact is today's autos are superior to most all of the manuals.

Really? So what's up with all the complaints for the autos about being in the wrong gear; gear hunting; over revving; under revving; shifting too soon, like going into 6th gear at 35 mph, etc., etc. etc. As well as the ECT button "fixes", "manual" mode fixes, praying for a software update?.....
Fact is, manuals really do alleviate all these problems.

Not to mention the fact driving an auto is boring, and driving a manual is fun and puts you in touch with the vehicle. :stirthepot:
