Hiding spare key and remote start on 3rd gen

Going on long road trip - how do I hide the keyless start fob on my truck so bad guy can't just touch my driver door handle and get in?

Other than remove the battery? I must be missing something.

 

You have to be within a few inches of the truck with the fob. If said bad guy does not have the fob, he can't get in. Leave it in your pocket. Theoretically the fob should never have to leave your pocket.

I'm going backpacking. I'm parking my truck at the trailhead.

I'm taking key fob and tailgate key with me.

I want to leave a spare key fob and tailgate key with the truck in the event I lose the my car keys (or the fob gets wet) on the trail.

Sort of like hiding a spare key in the olden days.

 

I'm confused at your question. Please elaborate as to why you need to hide it away? The fob only works within like 2ft of the door, if you keep it on you, then you are fine

 

ah...as was noted, the fob has to be within inches of the door for it to work. just put the spare in a safe place in the truck bed...others have mentioned a hitch safe

I can put my fob on the tonneau and unlock/lock from the handle just fine. I don't think you can hide a fob and be assured that someone couldn't just walk up and open your door. If I were you I'd put the fob in a ziplock or vacuum seal a fob.

 

Hold lock on the fob and press unlock twice. This puts the fob in battery saving mode disabling it from sending signal.

 

I used to carry the fob in my wallet, credit card size, fit in there nicely. Never worried about getting locked out as I always have my wallet in the front pocket of pants. If I fell in a pool or some other nonsense and it got wet, I always had the fob's spare back up, pull out key. So never stranded. Also, FWIW I carried a standard key on my keyring along with the house key. I'd never feel safe hiding a key on the vehicle somewhere. Either someone could find it, or it could fall off or something else. Imagine going hiking on an overnite or multi day trip and know your truck is start-able if only the crook can find the key. I'd be concerned, so rather not do that.

 

Take your spare key and pack it in a Fed X overnight envelope and leave it with a friend at home. That way they can overnight it to you in an emergency. Might be a hassle but better than leaving it with the truck.

This works like a charm,thanks! I presently have it strapped to the frame with gorilla tape in a "hide a Key" I will disable it. Its already far enough away to not trigger, but it might be there for awhile till I need it.

 

Well, maybe not so fast.

I placed my key fob on my back bumper of my truck (right above the trailer hitch) and was able to unlock my driver's door by touch the handle.

My truck is new (about a month old) and my key fob seems to work from the back bumper.

I'm a long time Toyota owner and have never experienced this with a key fob having this range.

I always thought the ford keypads were gay until I bought a ford. Best thing ever. And they don't look as bad as they did years ago

 

Don't think FedEx delivers to the trail head.

 

How is reactivated later when you want to use it?

 

Why don't you put the key/fob in a small ziplock bag and hide it up the trail head a bit under a rock or something? When you come back, you grab it and go. People step off the trail all the time to take a piss, so it shouldn't be hard to place this a few hundred feet from your truck. I don't think many would be going digging around randomly looking for a key fob.

 

I've actually considered this.

 

For reference, this is how it is supposed to work. not saying that you are wrong (If you say you tried it and it worked, I believe you), just referring to the manual for others reading.

 

just bag it and bury as someone stated above. done and done. as for the safe hitch, kinda cool. don't know if I would use one personally, but cool
