Will there ever be a diesel Tacoma?

Do the math ! Let's just use the Highlander drive train.
Have you ever priced a highlander hybrid and checked it's tow capacity and it's mileage ? It gets 28 mpg highway, and tows only 3500 lbs and cost $50k. Now, transfer that drive train over to a framed vehicle or reinforced unibody. Oh, it will more easily meet emission standards, but what do you have. You have a vehicle that cost more then a diesel, tows less and gets worse gas mileage then a Colorado diesel (30 mpg) on the road and tow 7000 lbs. In a truck, it won't be just 2 mpg worse either. It will be much worse. Wonderful. Toyota doesn't even think a diesel is cost effective !
Under load, even 3500 vs 3500 for each, the hybrid is maxing out and the diesel is under half load. The difference in mileage and performance will be huge in favor of the diesel in both areas. GM has tried it in a truck.....how well did they sell ?
If hybrids worked for a small inexpensive work trucks, they would have them by now.

Also Toyota has the 3.5 motor in the Avalon hybrid. Also the Lexus ES has it. Just a matter of time for the Tacoma.

So your reasoning for it not working well is that it would cost more ?

I talked to a sales rep at Toyota Somerset that told me Toyota was within 2 or 3 days of approving a Diesel for the new Tacoma, but then Cummins raised objections abut the number of engines they would commit to buy, or something like that.

Summary: In the end a diesel hybrid would add a very expensive electrified system to an already-expensive engine ... but produce a less impressive overall increase than in gasoline cars.

Probably over 1,000 individual posts on that topic, in this section, in the past 6-months alone.

I've seen plenty of articles with Toyota lead designers laying out the reasons why it won't be happening with the 3rd gen tacoma.

Since Tacoma's are hitting the $40K mark...for another measly $10K, you can get a diesel 4WD Sprinter. :D

Won't be as capable offroad as a Tacoma...however be a great work/camp/gear hauler when the road conditions are poor. Which ya know...my Tacoma kinda sucks for hauling gear. Believe you need both vehicles in the stable. ;)

I would love to have one as a camper dirt bike hauler. I really drool over those Outside Van conversions. Car and Driver did a decent review: http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2015-mercedes-benz-sprinter-4x4-first-drive-review

LOL, I was thinking the same!

Must be some new gov'mint regulation or something, who knows.

Those TFL guys are kinda funny...for being "truck guys" the dude driving must not get out into the country much, by the way he was acting
around that herd of cattle at the end.

The reason diesel is more here is because of the ULSD requirements. Hydrotreating and Hydrocracking take more pressure and more exotic catalysts to remove more and more sulfur. Most other countries don't require as much sulfur removal and a dirty running Hydrocracker is cheaper than building a full FCC set up and it still creates all 3 common types of fuel oils along with LPG.

Guess it's time to throw a little gasoline on this diesel fire. It seems to me that the folks who say that a hybrid (read gas and electric) can't pull as much of a load as a diesel haven't paid much attention to the engines that propel today's trains....called diesel-electric locomotive. Some of these things weigh 270,000 lbs. and are powered by a hybrid combination of a 3,200 hp 2 stroke Diesel engine connected to a generator producing 4,700 amps of electric current driving 4 drive motors. These trains are capable of speeds in excess of 110 mph.

The advantage of the electric motors is that they produce maximum torque immediately, which would come in pretty handy when pulling large loads.

Yeah, a lot of heavy industry use diesel electric hybrids, can't beat the torque of an electric motor.

Imagine what capabilities could be if we got rid of a traditional drive train, and stuck electric motors in the wheels.
