Whistling Noise in Crosswinds At Highway Speed

Thanks guys, mine does this and the helpful descriptions here make me certain it is the door seal version of the problem that my truck has. Will try one of the tubing/stripping mods to tighten the seal. It is this kind of thing that makes routine visits to TW worth the time!

 

This is odd. I just happened to read this thread a few days ago and, the day after, I heard the very same noise for the first time. Fortunately, my son heard it as well, so it wasn't my imagination. I was doing 70mph in cross winds. If it continues I'll have to do something as I don't think I can tolerate the road noise along with the kazoo sounds. Truck is at 38k miles.

Woo wee, God I found this thread. Christmas Eve I had this humming sound all the way from Phoenix to Palm Springs. This morning, I had it all the way from Victorville to Indio.

Guess tomorrow I'll see if I have it from Salton Sea all the way back to Phoenix. Will go see the dealer on Monday about the windshield seals.

 

If the windshield wasn't sealed correctly, seems like it would leak water into the truck ??

Dude, it's been amazing. I'm back to loving my truck, and not wanting to drive it into the river. I stopped by the dealership the following Monday and showed the service guy that I'd been dealing with how I stopped the noise. He was dumbfounded. I went for my 30,000 mi. service today and again, showed a service guy the fix. Everybody I've spoken with at the dealership claims to have NEVER heard about the issue. I find it hard to believe, since all you have to do is Google "Tacoma door wind noise" to find the gazillion posts referring to it. Oh well, I'm super glad and thankful to the few guys in this thread that spent as much effort as they did to figure it out.

 

i heard some nonesense going on while i was driving crosswind a few days ago. this may be my issue.

 

did they give you a TSB number? maybe its on your paperwork?

 

looks like you guys used a compressor to replicate the noise.

From a quick browse thru all the pages, blow air at the following locations to find the noise:

1. Around the mirror base at the door.
2. Window seal (seal at glass or seal at door frame?)
3. Door seal itself.
4. Rubber seal between grille and hood.

Is this correct?

Please confirm 2.

 

Yes some of us did use a compressor to try and replicate the noise. In my particular case I was able to make the noise in certain locations, like around the side mirror and outer window seal, but none of it really lead to finding what the issue was. When I found the TSB for the Hilux's on another forum, it described exactly the problem and said it was the inner door seal. I decided to go with that. Have not heard the noise since.

 

The funny thing is, it's not just a Tacoma/Toyota thing. If you google "window noise in crosswind" or similar it will come up with many other brand makes and models with this issue. It's how I found the Hilux TSB.

 

What did you do to fix yours?

 

Check out Post #129 on page 7, the 2nd pic in it illustrates the location of the problem highlighted by 3 red lines. It's a top-down view of the door while open. He used thin plastic tubing in those areas whereas I used a foam weatherstrip for the left red line area and screen spline for the right red line area. I did not put anything in the center red line area. It just tightens everything up and doesn't let the wind vibrate the seal in any way.

 

This started in mine a couple of months ago, just after the dealership did an alignment after I finished my lift. It almost sounded like it was coming from the tire area at first and it freaked me out....thought they had screwed something up and I was about to lose control or something. Then it went away after I called the dealership. But about 2 weeks ago it started again and then got worse pretty much every day since unless there is just no wind at all. I would imagine the longer it goes without a "fix" the more persistent it becomes. Great info in this thread. I'm been too busy through the holidays to attempt anything, but it's time to get to work on it now. Pretty sure mine is the door because I can stop the noise by pressing out on it every single time.

 

They didn't give me one or a time frame. All they said is there was something coming out to resolve the issue.

11k mi, 7/15 build date does it. REALLY notice it on stormy cold days driving the I-70 corridor west of Denver into the mountains up to the Eisenhower tunnel and the same stretch back down to town again. Occurs during blustry/heavy buffeting cross and/or head winds. Weirdly, as some describe loading weight into the bed of the truck making a difference, I seem to notice some difference according to the pitch of the truck based on the terrain (uphill/downhill grade). It seems the "attitude" of the truck or "angle of attack" into the wind does make some difference.

 

I did the same as post #129 using 1/4 inch screen spline from ace hardware fix cost me $3 and noise is gone 6 hour trip in two directions at 70-80mph, 20knot crosswind noise is gone ! Thank you TW!

 

I'm gonna have to try this. I hadn't noticed any noise in 2 years of driving till yesterday. Windy day in Houston yesterday and driving around the highway gave me the kazoo noise
