Frame rust recall

I read it as Focus sold 191,473 units
Tacoma sold 162,370 units

Clearly I'm reading that as more sales. Sorry if you don't see that.

 

Well if we were discussing the November top 20, why would you look at the ytd sales? Just wondering.

Emailed Toyota Canada, and they told me to book an appointment asap. Taking the truck in for inspection next Thursday! After briefly looking at my frame, doesn't look like there are any holes or anything to qualify for full replacement... is the spray even worth getting done? looks like an ineffective mess considering most of the rust is inside the frame. Anybody that has had it for a while have any thoughts?

 

Rust is oxidation of the steel. The spray helps seal out oxygen. As our frames are not fully boxed it should cover pretty well. Question to ask is what they do to prep for the spray. You really don't want to trap moisture in the undercoating. Also you want to remove as much scale and flakes as possible. Even a light acid etching maybe for good adhesion.

 

The reason i ask is because our frames are multiple layers, so even in the places that it looks fine on the outside, you can look between the layers and its all flaking rust.

I'm sure it will still help, but i feel like it might be too little too late? find out next thursday anyway!

 

I had my truck spayed about 7 months ago. The dealership did a terrible job (no prep at all. I could see where they coated over flaking paint). Well I was washing my truck the other day and part of the coating started coming off with just standard water hose pressure. Long story short I have an appointment in 3 days to get it looked at again. Thought I would post this so others can keep an eye on their frame afterwards. I'll try to post an update after it gets looked at again

 

When I called under mine I could see that mine was sprayed at some point. But here in MN undercoating is somewhat common. Did see a few electrical connectors that are going to hell to get apart if needed.

 

I feel the under coating would be greatly effective if they prepped the surface a little better. I expected they would Atleast pressure wash the old dirt and paint off. Hopefully they will get it right on Friday after I raise a little hell

 

Funny you mention that. I picked up a gas cap cover for $30 on eBay last week. Brought it in with the truck and said I'd like this installed when you finish fixing the oil leak. If you remember in one of my previous posts Toyota wanted to charge me $168 for the part and another $120 to paint and install. Today when I went to check on the truck I said to the service manager, "This has been one fuck up after another. I hope you do right by me and install that gas cover for free." He agreed and said he'd have it installed for nothing but would have to charge $50 to have it panted silver, the color of my truck. I told him to to forget the the paint and just install the cover. It's black and I think it'll actually look badass that way. Already looking into what type of decal I can put on it.

 

I had my frame recall inspection done last year and was surprised that my frame didn't qualify. My 2006 Tacoma was in upstate NY from 2006-2012, but I moved to Florida in mid-2012. When I had brought my truck to the dealership to have some of the other recalls done, they told me after the preliminary frame inspection that I would have to bring it to the dealership's body/collision shop on site. After a 30 minute inspection, they told me that it had passed. They basically told me that they were looking for perforations in the frame by hitting on it with a hammer. They also didn't offer to spray it with any corrosion inhibitor (not like it would really do much) because that was only offered in states up north. I am not happy about the whole situation, as I am concerned that the corrosion will just get worse. Also, I believe that the rusted frame will definitely hurt the value of the truck if I trade it in or sell it. Based on the pictures of my frame that I've taken, does this look like "normal" rust? Has anyone had their frame replaced that wasn't as corroded as mine? Is there anything I can do about the rust?

 

Take it to another dealer. I see holes in that one crossmember.

 

I also think that you should send these photos to Toyota customer care. Maybe even take a road trip up north. I'm guessing you got a lazy dealership not wanting to tie up a tech for a month.

 

I had mine treated by Toyota in August of 2014, so it's been a year and a half. The coating appears to be holding up well. They also treat the internal surface of the frame. They left this on the mirror when I picked it up.

 

That's great to hear, thanks for the info! Honestly I'm hoping for full frame replacement, just so I can seal it from new, but I highly doubt that will happen!

Sounds like crawling under and scrubbing off all the rust before they seal it will be a good idea though

 

This sealant y'all keep referring to sounds like a nightmare. The fact that they don't take the frame off and seal it makes no sense. But then again if they did that it'll cost the same as giving you a new frame. Sounds like a really lame way for Toyota to cover their @ss.

 

Yea I was highly disappointed when I picked up my truck and there was goop dripping from my frame. If I would have known then what I do now I would have just undercoated It my self

 

No worries.. like i said, a year and a half later, it still looks fine. While I haven't heard of any real disaster frame replacement stories, I actually prefer it over tearing the truck apart to replace the frame. I was happy when it passed the frame test.

The more these issues are brought to corporate attention, the more likely they'll be addressed. It's not a big deal to file a complaint, it's just like speaking to a store manager when you're dissatisfied.
