I have no complains about my 5.7 iForce. Wish I could get that in smaller truck.

probably a good deal of the reason. Ford was still putting the carburated 351 HO in in trucks in 1987 even though they though a fuel injected version had been out for a while. Reason I heard was the big SUV was getting all of the fuel injected ones. Same thing when the 5.4 came out. The Expeditions got all of the initial ones. When I bought the new model F150 in 1997 getting a 5.4 was next to impossible. Glad I didn't because those early 5.4s were a bad design.

Back to the OP's original question.....the 4.0L is being phased out in N. America. But Toyota can't simple wave a magic wand to make all 4.0 applications disappear. It takes time. The phase-out of the 1GR began with the resigned '15 Tundra. You're now seeing it in the '16 Taco. The 4Runner is next...it's just a matter of when. Typically Toyota will wait to do an engine swap at what's known as a "major model change". There are so many hoops to jump through when introducing a "new" engine in an existing platform (i.e....2GR to current 4Runner) and it's quite expensive as well. If Toyota decides that the current 4Runner is going to be around for a few more years then they may find in their best interests to go ahead and adapt the 2GR to the current platform sometime in the next 1 or 2 model years. But, if there's a new 4Runner in the pipeline, then it's likely they'll wait until then. It just makes more sense to do so.

But Toyota is anxious to rid this market of the 1GR and it will happen.....much to some people's chagrin.

For 4x4 auto: Australia Hilux combined is 19.6. US Tacoma combined is 20. How is Hilux better?

The Australia mpg is higher for 'extra urban'; but, they don't drive as fast as US EPA hwy test. Oz is 75mph max with 39mph avg without stopping. US is 80 max / 48 avg with 5 stops.

Does Australia use imperial mpg or US mpg? I see a lot of people screwing that conversion up on here too.

There is no doubt the 2GR performs better in EPA mpg tests and emissions tests. It's a far more advanced motor. Hence it's good for CAFE requirements and it leaves room for tuning should the EPA make emissions requirements even tighter.

A 3.5 that is remarkably similar to the 2GR-FKS makes ~220 ftlb at 1500rpm.

    Edit: added units for clarity.

My humble opinion is that the truck engine garbage died long ago. It's total BS at this point. Only GM develops "truck only" engines now. Heck, even they seem poised to abandon that principle soon when they release their large FI engines.

The best gasoline towing motor, from a low RPM torque point of view, is the 3.5 L Ecoboost... which had it's first application outside of a truck...
