Gear oil

I've done my own oil changes and gear oil changes before and I've always used AMSOIL synthetic. I was able to change the rear differential oil but the front differential and transfer case drain bolt heads are now stripped. Decided to stop fighting with it and give Firestone a chance. They actually refused to work on it saying that they wouldn't use customer supplied oil and since it's over 100,000 miles they recommended a transmission shop. Something about the sludge build up that could cause other problems if drained. They actually said it could start slipping with fresh oil. Headed to the hardware store to buy a bolt extractor. Before I do this, should I be worried about changing the oil now? Sounded like a load of BS to me. I think they just didn't want to work on my truck because of the stripped bolt heads and customer supplied parts ( I had replacement OEM drain and fill plugs also).

 

They were feeding you a crock! Change the fluids. Good luck getting the fill plugs out. If you can't get the plugs out yourself, and have to have them professionally removed, don't quibble if they won't use your fluids. Just save your fluid for the next change, whenever that might be. ( a week or so from now???-LOL)

 

Just weld a grade 8 nut to the plug and zip it off with the impact.



As for the fluids, I would change them, sounds like the shop was just coming up with excuses due to the stripped plugs

 

hopefully you'll remember to remove the fill plug before removing the drain plug...

 

Just crack them flat on the face with a hammer. 99/100 will come loose that way.

 

If I could weld this would be a great option.

 

Tried this several times before stripping the bolt. Also tried freeze and release to no avail.

very important!! if you drain the oil then cant get the fill plug off then your gonna need a tow to the shop to get that plug out

 

I also use all AMSOIL since new and ONLY AMSOIL ! BEST!
