2.7L oil capacity

Yeah, I don't like partial qts either but it needs what it needs. I like mine right on the full mark. Eventually I'll have an extra qt sitting around and only have to buy 5.

Update on my recent posts. It was right on the full line but then climbed above that after driving it a while. I just changed the oil again. This time the truck was on a downward slant to the rear just as if the front end was up on ramps.. I put in 5 qts plus filled the filter all the way and had about an inch of oil in a leftover bottle from the last change. It's right on the full mark. It's dead on. Even after driving it many miles for the last week. I suspect the 5.7 or the 5.5 or the 6.1 various manuals and Toyota say is true. It seems to me the angle of the truck when it is being drained has a lot to do with it. I think depending on how the truck is sitting at the time will have an effect on how much oil we actually drain. Some is still staying in the engine. Every time I changed mine on level ground and added 6 qts or even 5.5 qts it was about a half qt overfilled by the dipstick. This last time I would guess I put in slightly less than 5.5 qts and I'm at the perfect level.

 

I don't see how you can't go by the dipstick. Unless you are consciously draining hot for 30 minutes on an incline, adding 6.1 qts after only draining 5 qts will make it too full. Do this twice and now you're 2 qts full. Eventually you need a reference point which is the dipstick.

 

Your logic if faulty on the quantity drained. The same amount will be left in the engine after draining. Regardless of how much was in the engine before draining.

 

182,500 miles on my 2.7L (2TR-FE) and do my own oil changes. Every time, I put 6 quarts in after draining the old oil (while hot) for about 20 minutes. Runs like the day I bought it and it was inspected at 172k miles and the mechanic said all gaskets, etc. are great.

An update on my last post. After driving the truck around I ended up adding maybe a 1/4 of a qt to get it to the full level so 6 qt's is right in the ball park. My problem is that where I live? There is absolutely no where I can find that is even close to level. Everything is at a slant including the gas station fuel islands so I have to guess or drive 15 miles to find something level. I live in the mountains. All in all after the last oil change I have put in very close to six quarts with the filter change and I'm right at full on the dipstick. On level ground.

 

I have a 2.7 and put 6 quarts in it. It ran over the full mark and seemed to run a bit different. I just changed it put in 5 quarts and it is spot on the top dot for full on the dip stick. As long as the oil pressure is up, light is off there is no damage happening. I don't care if there is one oz over what it needs to just keep pressure, pressure is pressure. I ran it 50 miles and it seems to run a with a bit more smooth with 5 quarts. I know some would rather put in 10 quarts if someone said its better, but 5 quarts shows full and it runs good its 5 quarts for me.

When I first got my 2006 2.7 I changed the oil with 6 quarts and it showed overfull about 1/4 inch. I didn't like this but also it wasn't grossly overfull and I didn't notice any problems or strange sounds or smells. The next time I started with 5 quarts which put the oil level about 1/4 inch below the full mark (most of the way up between add and full). Perfect, in my opinion. I noticed the engine revved more freely, this is because of less windage in the crankcase. Windage will also send more oil vapor and mist through the PCV system which ends up in the intake manifold, unless you have a catch can.

Here's some information from Wikipedia "windage" (I have never heard the term cranktrain before LOL):
"In automotive parlance, windage refers to parasitic drag on the crankshaft due to sump oil splashing on the cranktrain during rough driving, and/or dissipating energy in turbulence from the cranktrain moving the crankcase gas and oil mist at high RPM. Windage may also inhibit the migration of oil into the sump and back to the oil pump, creating lubrication problems. Some manufacturers and aftermarket vendors have developed special scrapers to remove excess oil from the counterweights and windage screens to create a barrier between the crankshaft and oil sump."

I have concluded that the manual says 6 quarts as the capacity, which is correct for a DRY (new or rebuilt) engine, but incorrect for a regular oil change service. Most owner's manuals say that the listed capacities are approximate, use the dipstick to check the actual oil level in the engine. The Tacoma manual does not say this but it's the rule I follow.

For what it's worth, I've run my 2.7 with 4.5 quarts (just barely above the add mark) for 5000 miles and never had any problems at all. It still runs like new today at 125,000 miles. If the oil level is in the safe zone between add and full, it's fine for normal use. If I was towing, hauling, or really wheeling and off-roading my truck, any kind of severe service... I would definitely put the oil level at or near the full mark.

 

After reading all these posts, I conclude that the 2tr fe is pretty forgiving on oil qty. Huge sump for a 4 cyl. I will trust the dipstick.

In my younger days, I decided my Rabbit diesel needed and oil cooler. Later I was driving on an LA freeway and one of the lines on the cooler popped off and emptied my sump. I shut my engine off and coasted over to the side (no power steering on a Rabbit). What a mess! I installed the line and poured in the single quart of oil I carried in the car. I was amazed that the oil light went out when I started the engine. I drove to a gas station very slowly and bought oil.

I don't think a level of 4.5 quarts in the 2tr fe is anywhere near pickup tube. I would drive at the low level on the dipstick with complete confidence.

 

Is the oil filter the same as the v6? I have a batch left.

Do I use 0w20 for a 2008 2.7 in calif? Truck has about 82k miles.

 

Check your oil filler cap and/or manual.

 

I took my truck in for the 1st service on the 9th of November. The service tech put 6 quarts in mine also. I asked the advisor about the manual saying 6.2 quarts and he said they put 6 quarts in all the 2.7 engines. He came out and pulled the dipstick and the level was right at the full/ or overfill dot. The .2 quart amount to just over 6 ounces of oil. Works for me!!

 

Agreed. It burns oil over time. I never have 6 quarts of spent oil when I change my oil even though thats what goes in every time.

 

I just changed my oil and filter again but this time on pretty level ground. It took 6 quarts to put it right at the full line. I got lucky this time since there is no level spot in the city I live in that I can find. I checked it again when I did find a flat spot a few days later in another city. It seems the 2.7 holds six quarts. Mine seems to take a different amount every time since it's always in a different position.

Last but not least I love my Fumoto drain valve. What a freakin' dream come true.

 

Oil doesn't "burn" over time. Especially full synthetics. An engine may "use" oil but it doesn't "burn" it unless it's got some serious issues. My 2004 2.7 never loses anything between oil changes and I'm changing it at 5000-7500 mile intervals at this point in time pending the oil analysis I just sent off after my 1st 7500 mile oil and filter change.

 

Semantics. Yes it is normal for an engine to "use" a small amount of oil. The cylinder walls have a very thin film of oil, and some of this oil gets *burned* during combustion. Then the film of oil is replaced during the next upward stroke of the piston (exhaust). My eyeball says the oil level in my 2006 2.7 is always the same, every single time, although I know a very small amount of oil (not enough to see a difference on the stick) is being used / burned / consumed... we are talking about the same thing... as long as it's not leaking onto the ground and it's not smoking out the tailpipe! That is where issues arise.

 

When I change my oil and filter, it takes 5 3/4 quarts. I fill the filter up and screw it on. Then pour about 5 quarts into the engine.

I always have 1/4 quart left over out of a 6 quart case. Runs great.

 

I just changed my oil in my 2.7...went with the stock Toyota filter and put in 5 quarts of Valvoline synthetic 0w-20. My problem is the oil is so clear, I cant really tell where it reads on the dipstick!
