I think I'm leaving this thread more confused about PSI than when I came. My placard say 29PSI cold, I think I'm just going to stick with that.

I'm more interested in what the individual tire and tire manufacturer says and how and where I am using their product than some generic one size fits all sticker on the door. Don't get me wrong, It's probably a good guideline, but I believe it's just that.

Real world driving shows that my tires are doing just fine. Dust/chalk test, driving characteristics, etc, all lead that the 40 the truck came with is just fine.

"Over inflated" by 4 PSI is not hurting anything, and the Max PSI is 51. I am not Over inflated.

The saying "But did you die" comes to mind here...

People asked what we were running for tire PSI, and I told them. I used to work in a tire dealer/shop, if I saw/felt any physical signs of needing an adjustment based on real world application, not some "general fit" sticker and chart I would make adjustments.

The way I look at it, by running a slightly higher PSI that is in no way affecting the safety and effectiveness of the tire itself, I am helping MPG (VERY MARGINALLY) but every little bit helps in the end.

    Thanks.

You are 10 psi overinflated. That is 33% more than stock.
    I'm just leading horses here...
    Do whatever you want.

Give up lol. Some people want to argue with sensible logic just so they're not wrong.

A chart while it may be "logic" doesn't reflect real world use.

While my trucks 38-40 psi at 15 ft elevation to you is over inflated, its working just fine as I drove up to 7000 feet and 20 degrees. Now my tires were reading 34. Still a safe pressure and not worrying about being under inflated.

Tell me, exactly what harm, damage, etc is running my tire at 40 causing? All you do is keep telling me it's wrong, it's wrong, it's wrong, and reference charts etc, but you offer no real world application or ill effects.

Yes, the pressure is higher than that stupid sticker on the door, yes, it is higher than some chart, yes it is within the safe range of the tire, and yes it is leaving a perfectly flat and full contact patch, wearing perfect, traction is phenomenal, and ride is acceptable.

    What REALLY is the problem?

PDI on the door and tire is just recommended. You need to read tire wear and set it. Also in the winter you want to run a few pounds heigh in the snow.

You can do what you want, but as long as you are using the stock tire size, then the door sticker is specific to the vehicle, sub model, and tire and in no way generic. In reality, if you are running unloaded, you should probably be a slightly lower pressure, but I don't think anyone is going there. The pressure rating on the tire itself is only a maximum that has nothing to do with proper pressure for any particular vehicle.

However, if you are running different size tires and have data from the tire manufacturer that indicates the proper pressure for your vehicle and load (most likely just the load, but OK, I'm onboard), then I think you have a basis.

If you want to come up with your own value based on your own testing and you are willing to accept responsibility for that decision, more power to you. I think you previously stated you run 35psi. That seems a little high but with reason (my unqualified opinion), especially if you are running a plow and carrying a heavy load.

I'm running "design" pressure at the moment to see how I like it, but I too will likely increase TP a bit and see how I like the change.

It seems almost universal that vehicle manufacturer specified TP seems lower than I would think appropriate. I assume there's a reason, but I don't know what it would be. With CAFE, you would think they would be biased toward higher pressures, so I'm really not sure what gives.

I am confident that you'll be fine with that too. Maybe we make too big a deal out of +/- 8 lbs of air pressure in the big scheme of things.

I suppose if we were on the track or driving those crazy off road rocky desert scenarios we've all seen on the web, it would be a different story and worth getting into a lather over.... For me, puttin' around town, work or onto the local woods road.... not so much.

Looking around the parking lot here and at the people "driving", I wonder if many of them could even find the air stem let alone check or adjust it, if they ever have.... they too seem to be getting by. I certainly don't have all the answers.

We'll be alright, Drive safe and keep it under a 100 !

^ Exactly. majority of America don't even know how to air up a tire, or how to spot an over/under inflated tire. Another half of that group doesn't understand TPMS lights, resetting the sensors, etc. The all seem to be ok. Then again, people let they caliper pistons eat into the fins on a rotor and still live to tell about it....

I've always run a higher pressure than the sticker says in my last 4 vehicles. All of them have not had any issues, other than maybe a *slightly* rougher ride... But when you had a Ford Bronco, and a torsion bar Ranger... You quit caring about ride quality LOL!

Just be glad we aren't the people flying down the interstate with belts showing...

HHhmmmm... you could school me here on re-setting the TPMS sensors if the OP doesn't mind ?

The manual tells how to reset the system after a pressure change. There is a button under the dash. RTFM, and you are good.
