me personally, I much rather spend that $300 on having it done rather then give up 2 days of my time busting knuckles and doing it myself, especially with a large portion of my tools being made in Taiwan. maybe when I was in my 20's and 30's I would try to save that money but not now that im in my 50's my free time is more valuable then that so I don't want to waste an entire weekend under the hood

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
I'm definitely with Keakar. I've built many motors and turned wrenches on all my vehicles. Now being an "ole timer" in my fifties, my time seems more valuable doing other things.

I third the advice above. $580 is a very decent quote. The crank bolt can be a bear. I did the motor crank with breaker bar method wedged against the ground to remove the bolt on a Camry. The crank and cam seals are fun to swap as well. Nothing is worse than getting everything back together and have a leak.

I know who is going to be getting a couple of phone calls. Do you warranty your work and have the job completed in a working day?

Completed in a day: yes, no problem.
Warrantied: maybe - certainly will fix my mistakes. Won't be responsible if the crank bolt breaks when I hit it with the impact gun to remove it, or similar acts of god. Can't promise to fix mistakes the last guy made when he worked on it, although I will tell you what's up and try to make it right.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Same here, I am 23 but don't feel confident enough to do it myself. Whenever I try and dive into something deep like that I always end up screwing something up that ends up costing more money to fix. I'm only good for simple things like oil changes, transmission fluid/filter changes, diff oil changes, and radiator flushes and changes. Accessory belts and whatnot are easy too.

There is only one way to learn bro. I started by running errands for a Polish asshole that owned the best Euro shop in town. After a few years i was working on $100k Porsches. Just read read read, and start taking stuff apart and putting it back together.

And again, if youre in LA, ill do a timing belt for $300 all day long. :D

Hey man not all of us Polacks are assholes alright? :p

Also if you have an impact and take the rad out you can zip the cam shaft bolt right off. I would recommend the tool for torquing it though. My home made tool didn't work for shit. Also pics of this blue taco?!

My local dealership said $900 with parts and labor for the water pump and timing belt. I bought the Goodyear kit off Amazon for tree fiddy and installed it with an automotive competent buddy in a weekend because we took out time and had to run to town a few times for stuff. $580 I'd wonder where they're making money.

EDIT: I too felt incompetent doing it myself and fortunately my friend had done it at least once before. If you can't find a friend, don't have the tools and garage to work on it and can afford the extra $2-300 I'd have someone else do it. If they'll do it for hourly wage (get a quote for the job FIRST) if you provide parts it may save you some money. It isn't difficult truthfully it's just intimidating although getting the timing belt ON wasn't the easiest for me.
