My Winch Cradle Setup

I know a bunch of you guys got in on the Mobtown black Friday sale. So, this might help some of you who bought their recovery bar?

First, I installed the Mobtown Recovery Bar


Next, I bolted the winch to the FIRST winch cradle. IT was welded together crooked...


So, I returned the first cradle and bought another that was three times the price... The second one was perfect... Almost


It's put together straight, but it stuck out from the grill way too far for me.


So, after measuring front and rear, I introduced it to the chop saw and drilled a new hole for the receiver pin.


Much better


Still fits the rear after the trim


Close...


For the wiring, I purchased the kit I linked to above.

It came with two 3' lengths of cables with disconnects for the winch and for the front of the truck. I hooked one to the winch, and one directly to the battery terminals and stuck it through the grill.

The kit also came with a 20' plus set of cables with disconnect for the rear. I didn't feel like running the cables under the truck. Instead, I bought some jumper cable ends and crimped them on.



These cables were not connected to one another like jumper cables are. So, I ran electrical tape down the entire length of cable to make them easier to handle and store.


And lastly, rolled it up neatly, put it in the jumper cable bag, and put it in the toolbox.






I also had a cover made for it out of tonneau cover material. It ruins the "look" for sure, but I'm hoping It'll keep salt and road grime off of the synthetic rope.

Nope. I leave it on the front. That's the reason I went with 886's when I did the lift.

That's also why I had the cover made.

 

this is the winch set up I'm aiming for. you can't beat the option of front and rear winching on the fly. but ill only be rocking it when i need it

my only question why would you leave it on all the time? Isn't one of the luxuries of having a mobile winch set up so you don't have to drag it around with you everywhere you go, no?

 

The luxury is having options. I can take it off if I want. That is nice.

But, one thing I know for sure, when you need the winch, you don't want it to be sitting in the work bench.

Keep this thread updated when you use it. I'm sure its not as sturdy as one bolted to a plate bumper but i know it will get you out.

Another reason I leave it on, is that I put 886's on with the lift. I know I'm going to do sliders and armor at some point. Didn't want to have to do the coils twice. The winch up front helps break the 886's.

 

hey, how much would you say the whole cradle and winch weigh? like just what you'd be pulling on and off the truck

 

The winch is 85 lbs with synthetic rope. The cradle is 30 lbs. 115 lbs. Not too bad.

 

That's easy - rescue some poor stranded jeep.

 

Interesting... I'm running steel line. I wonder what my setup weighs now. I would have guessed less than that.

 

I just checked their site. Synthetic is 89.1 lbs. wire is 116 lbs. so, another 25-30 lbs depending on rope length. Theirs are both 100'.

 

So, the novelty of having the winch on the front constantly has warn off...

That'll keep it out of your way. Gonna be a pain to lift the lid on that box now, though.

 

Yeah, this is true. It's all recovery gear and such in there. If I need to get in, chances are, I'll need the winch anyway...

 

Great post...Thanks for the write-up. I am curious on your thoughts regarding the hitch pin strength for recovery. It seems that would be a weak point, but I have never used one so I am curious. I like the low profile of the Mobtown recovery front bar.
