Anyone have a preference on 45 acp as far as grains go? 200 or 230?

I usually shoot the 230 grains, personally. Just personal preference; a lot of what I like about the .45 is that it shoots a big frigging rock. Might as well go with the heavier one, lol.
That and 230gr. is a lot more common at the local stores.

$210 + shipping. I figure spend a little more for 100% brass case and FMJ.

You save about $100 per thousand rounds (I'm referring to 556/7.62x39) over brass cased. If you shoot a lot like I do, the savings realized by buying steel case over brass will more than pay for a few new barrels when the time comes. I have friends who have safe queen rifles because they will only shoot brass in their precious babies and can't afford the ammo......I'd rather shoot

I agree on the corrosive primers. They are definitely catering to the market now.

    Exactly right on the bimetal.

    Here's the test. http://www.luckygunner.com/labs/brass-vs-steel-cased-ammo/

any suggestions for a first time handgun buyer in california (lots of hoops to jump through now) looking for home protection, will not be able to carry and conceal as i am a teacher. still go out and go to the range. but just looking for ideas as to what to look into. hear a lot about the glock 19 because of its capabilities to modify and adapt to the user, but i am not so sure, any guiding light would be greatly appreciated.

Glock 19, glock 17, Sig p320, Sig SP2022, Smith and Wesson M&P (I think they are still on roster) are my top 5.

Best thing to do is go to a gun store that has a range (something like P2K in San Diego, or poway weapons (in poway) and handle as many as possible and shoot the ones that are comfortable.
I don't know if your area has any places similar to what is available in SD though.

First, for a new shooter it's always a good idea to find a friend that is familiar with firearms to take you to a range and show you some guns. Rent a few guns see what fits your hand well and what you enjoy.
Yes, Glock 19 is a staple and you can't go wrong. Springfield XD, Smith and Wesson Shield, and Beretta PX4 Storm are also good first choices. Just go try some and see what you like!

-Shoot as many as you can and pick whatever you're the most accurate with off the bat.
-Placement is more important than caliber, so if you hear people saying you need a 45 to knock the guy across the room, quit listening to that person and do not take any of their advice.
-Since it's going to be a night stand gun, typically people will recommend something larger because having more capacity never hurts. And since you don't have to try and conceal it, there's no reason to buy a single stack subcompact, unless you shoot it the best.

FN, Sig, CZ, Glock, S&W, and Springfield all make pistols that will work for you and are generally under $500. I'm not sure which are on the roster though.

:gossip: Capacity isn't an issue for him, 10rd limit.

But x2 what he said, a larger frame gun will be easier to control.

No I've used that too but this one was AK specific.
Edit: I feel extra dumb, it was alaskaslist. Can't get it to pull up on my phone now though.
