I went with the Toyota one because it to me is an easier install.

On the URD short throw shifter, you have to remove the plastic bushing, add the URD extension, add the clamshell spacers and set screws then reuse the stock arm. Not the end of the world at all but.......

The Toyota shifter is a simple remove the stock one and replace it with the new one...

just to confirm- you did this on your 2014? I don't believe TRD has one available for 2016 yet.

Yes on my 14. I honestly don't know if Toyota has one coming out for the 16's yet......simply because I don't own one.

Educate me guys. I currently have an '87 Toyota Pickup with those manual hubs but am looking into getting a new Tacoma. What is the advantage to the externally locking hubs? I assume they are fairly bullet proof service wise. Any other advantages? I was kind of looking forward to having a truck that I could put into 4wd to get out of our snow packed development but then being able to switch if off once I get onto the main road which has been cleared. Currently I drive around with my hubs locked whenever I think I might need it for even part of my journey.

Less rotating mass with them unlocked, better fuel economy unlocked, less wear on front end components, serviceable, stronger I could go on but I think you will get it.

You missed the biggest advantage IMO, when you shift from 2H to 4H you go from 2H to 4H as fast as you can move the lever from point A to B. No delay whatsoever. A good 20 years ago when I was considerably less experienced that instant engagement saved my bacon. I'd like to still have it, this new fangled "on-demand" takes too damn long.

MT guy here too, love my manuals have had many. Has anyone found any good after market floor mats for a MT yet. I checked husky and weathertech websites and it doesn't look like they have mats for 2016 MT tacos.. anyone?

It's not instant. You gotta wiggle the steering wheel, do a rain dance, massage the dial, etc. and then maybe, just maybe you'll get it to engage.

Anywhere from 1/2 to 2 seconds. Sometimes requires some of the finesse @highwhey describes. I've driven a shit ton of 4WDs, pretty much all on-demand part time systems need the stars to align before engagement. To be fair, manual transfer cases and manual hubs can also be out of sync and take a minute to gently engage, but in a panic grab for 4H you'll always find mesh. I guarantee it.

I don't have engagment problems either, but I do have problems with the way it engages. On-demand part time 4WD will not force engagement, regardless of transmission. Every company vehicle I've ever had (except one, a sweet little gen2 Prius) had part time 4WD and AT. These trucks include Ford, Chevy, and Toyota, those with on-demand 4WD will simply not engage unless things are properly lined up. Personally I've only own 4WD vehicles with manual transfer cases up until last month, all Toyota and one Subaru. You can force a manual shift into engagement because that sweet little computer between your ears can decide that getting into 4WD right f-ing now is more important than gear longevity. If yours engages instantly every time, either...

...you know what, I'm not going to bother with the quippy finish. It doesn't. Also, I'm sorry to hear about you losing your left foot to diabetes, at least that's what I assume must be the reason for getting a truck with a slushbox and then seeking out lively discussion in this thread.;)

In the 2005-2015 Tacomas, you had to trim a tiny bit on the top of the auto weathertech mats to prevent the clutch from potentially snagging the mat. I just did a small cutaway below the clutch pedal only. I assume it would be similar for same for the 2016.

My '95 4R 5-speed had the ADD system (nice name, Toyota) until I stripped it out and put on manual hubs. Couldn't find rebuildable Aisin hubs reasonably priced, so I just bought new Warn hubs. It makes a huge difference in front end noise, plus the MPG went up a little bit. I'm sure there would be people who would pay real money to have a kit for 2nd/3rd gen Taco's, along with a manual transfer case, but for most drivers, I doubt they would see the point.

Didn't read all the thread, but I'm sub'd now. Love my MT.
Well then, scratch Limited off the list when new truck purchase comes around; maybe that'll change in the next 3-5 yrs.:fingerscrossed:

FWIW ... I had to make an additional trim after a subzero temp spell, the mat stiffens and lays a bit different when extreme cold. For situational awareness for us colder climate folks.

For those curious about weathertech mat trimming for clutch pedal clearance (this is from my 2005):

Searched far and wide for my 2015 in the configuration i wanted. Apparently Toyota didn't make a ton of access cabs with a 6 speed.
