Anybody having a hard time getting a Glock 19? My brother is waiting for his 3-4 months "special order" and he's LE. I thought about getting one but hate the possibility of waiting the same if not longer. Or should I just get a HK V9 and call it a day? :D

I'm in nazis California if that matters.

My first suggestion for home protection is, DONT BUY A HAND GUN FOR HOME PROTECTION.

The two most effective HOME PROTECTION firearms are a 410 shotgun, or a 12 gauge pump shotgun.

    1. Simply hearing the slide rack on a shotgun is enough to make most men piss themselves when they are somewhere they aren't supposed to be.
    2. When it is dark, having a firearm that has a larger probability of hitting something is key.
    3. Shotgun rounds typically don't travel far after entering a wall, keeping unintended targets safer. This is not the case for handgun ammo. It will penetrate walls and potentially injure other occupants of the home.
    4. Shotguns double as blunt weapons better as they have more weight, if you need to put a pop knot on someone's forehead.
    5. The 410 variety are shorter, which is beneficial when moving throughout a home.

For your *first* home defense weapon, I suggest one of those two, however, I also suggest you pick up a hand gun, and take it to the range, and get comfortable with it, and also take some defensive carry classes before bringing that type of weapon in to your inventory for home defense.

Tons of them here in Maine too...
All of the local shops have got at least 3-4 of them in the display case.

Thanks bud. Kidd's quality is hard to beat in the .22 game... in my opinion.

I am wanting to at some point build a .22. Probably a .920 barrel, but in satin black, with a bright hard maple stock, finished out nicely. Nothing for competitions, but mainly for fun. And, well, you know, to hit a can at 20 yards with open sights....lolololol

I think you need to mount a 10-50 power scope on there for ranges like that...

Do you know what the sound of the pump on a shotgun means? It's the same thing it means when the good guy racks the slide in a movie...the gun was empty. A self defense weapon shouldn't be empty.

What's the pattern on a shotgun at 30 feet? Why jump straight from .410 to 12g? What's wrong with 20g?

I'd argue if you want a shotgun, get a .410 with defense loads (there are a few good ones) or a 20g with bird shot. A 20g is the happy medium in the shotgun world. No .410 is shorter than 18.5 inch barrel without a tax stamp - I can get 12's and 20's that are exactly the same length.

And, in reality, bird shot is the only thing that isn't going to penetrate multiple walls of drywall if that's the concern. If you don't know where every member of the house is, I don't care what the ammo/weapon combo is, you shouldn't be pulling the trigger. Know your target and what is beyond it...

The recommendations above to shoot multiple guns, get help from friends or an instructor. Find what's right for you. But what do I know? I'm just some guy on the internet on a truck forum :) Check out calguns.net if you want California gun talk!

    Yes, I know that.

Why did I jump from a 410 to a 12 gauge, hm. Not sure. More common shell? Bigger shell, easier to reload in a moment of stress. 410 is smaller and easier to maneuver, size between a 12ga and 20ga is nil.

As far as knowing where members of a house are, you can know that all you want, but are you going to NOT shoot someone threatening your safety, because they are standing in a certain part of the house? Are you going to ask them to kindly move 3 feet to the left?

My suggestion was based off of NOT using a hand gun for home defense for your first weapon, you clearly missed that point, in favor of splitting hairs on shotgun calibers, and that's ok. Fact remains, a hand gun round has more potential to penetrate into other rooms and even other houses in the neighborhood (its happened to my house, so please, don't argue this, with a 38 special no less..) than shot shell.

Pattern of a shotgun at thirty feet depends upon choke, barrel length and shell type. You know this. You also know that if the OP decides to in fact use a shot gun for home defense, he will be guided to more than likely a Remington 870, possibly tac. (I don't know the Republic of Kalifornia gun laws, nor do I care to recognize them, or acknowledge them, so I'm not sure if that specific shotgun is legal for length) The pattern can be adjusted to preference. I personally like the pattern a double barrel coach gun has 10 yards. Even if it doesn't kill them, on the first trigger pull, it will maim them enough for me to finish the job with the second.

Also, to the OP, please look up the 4 laws of handling for guns.

If you're gonna use a 18" 12 gauge in your house at night after being woken up I hope you hit him in the first shot, because groggy and a shotgun blast inside without earpro is going to disorient you.

If he goes with a pistol, 45 loaded to normal pressures as well as 147gr 9mm (and probably some 40s) are subsonic which is a lot easier on the ears
