Wait, so there are 3 zerks per joint? I ask since on the first page of this thread, there is talk about 5 total (one per joint) and pictures to point you to them. At least on the 2016. I haven't looked under my truck yet to see how many I have.

Tacomas with greasable joints(4wd) have two different joints requiring two different greases. Universal joints get the grease without moly. Double-cardan joints get the grease with moly.
Not all Tacomas come with the same joints.
The one with 3 zerks is a double-cardan joint. See the photo 0uTkAsT posted of a double cardan; it has two spiders.

Best to crawl under and take a look before you do anything.

That's a first gen, which all have double cardans. I didn't think any of the second gens had double cardans.

sorry to keep beating a dead cow here, but does that mean the grease with moly is actually bad for the u-joints? or just not necessary?

and finally, what would happen to my truck if I didn't come to TW and remained blissfully ignorant to this issue???

I used AMSOIL Moly fortified Heavy Duty #2 on my old 2004 in all the U joints had 256,000 miles with no U joint failures, I would use just 1 type of universal Moly or not on a regular basis with the Oil change and everything will be good

U-joint went dry on my '99 Taco. Squealed like a grinding disk brake on coasting and very light throttle application.

Grease with MOLY can withstand and cling better to Metal moving parts like U joints better than non MOLY like the Double Cardan joint it moves a lot and can squish out grease thru spinning and squishing of this joint, basically it clings better to metal moving parts

I always try to grease them at every oil change. Minimum of 2x a year If I'm lazy.

I was reading about the Heavy Duty Off-Road grease on the Amsoil site, but the regular synthetic #2 was actually recommended for U-joints, so I went with that. In all reality it probably doesn't make much difference as long as A) you have grease and B) you maintain it regularly.
