This is my first truck, first tacoma, first ever kind of issue such as this. Does anyone else think this is an issue?

Piddles are the worst. Avoid a lot of water and the splashing should not be as big of a problem for you.

One day, I was driving after it rained and there was this huge puddle in a parking lot enterance. And I decided to gas it for the hell of making a splash, and right when I did this, a guy in a convertible with the top down decided to appear out of nowhere and.... Well.... I felt bad.

Maybe he needs an FJ cruiser. That 3rd wiper may be able to to keep up...

Or you could just trade it in for a Prius

Like the OP I too live in Florida and have experienced this phenomenon. When we get slight street flooding after summer rains, the drainage cannot handle the large sudden water volume. Sometimes an inch or two of water creeping onto the streets for a sustained length like a block or so driven at a slow 10-15 mph kicks the water forward/up and onto the windshield. Even with the wipers on full and rainx it's a zero visibility situation only in a Tacoma. My previous vehicles and my wife's Civic drive through it without a problem. You would think a higher truck like ours would do much better driving through some shallow water but it proves problematic.

I'm not sure how some people make it day to day without maiming themselves.

Obviously it's the opposite, a vehicle with higher front end ground clearance will have this issue especially on pavement. On deeper puddles the tires will push a certain amount of water up and forward because the treads cannot displace as much water as necessary out the side. A vehicle with less ground clearance has less tire below the ground clearance so when the water is forced forward and up it will hit the undercarriage and not carry forward past the front end.

There's probably a range of speeds for the water to come up and over our windshield and you just happen to be hitting the puddles at this speed. The air dam would probably help actually, of course this isn't stock on the 2013 or any OR. And I'm sure the type of tire you have contributed as well. A thicker tread AT or MT tire would probably allow more water to be forced out the side of the tire as opposed to pushing it forward.

So really, you should probably lower your Taco and put MTs on it! It's the only logical solution!! :D

Take none of this as gospel though, it just seems to make sense IMO.

I have an 06 tundra XSP, and have this same problem! This is the only vehicle that I have ever driven that has had this problem (my previous S-10, Camaro, mustang, sienna, windstar, focus and tracker never did anything like this). I realize the OPs question may sound stupid, but if you have experienced it, you would understand his concern. I was searching for a remedy to this when I came across this thread, because he is not exaggerating when he says he has "0" visibility for "several seconds" (absolutely nothing). My truck does this when going through shallow puddles at approx. 20 mph or faster. Going faster does not help. The first time this happened to me was shortly after buying the truck. I was going 70-80 on the freeway and hit some standing water left behind from prior rain. Going that fast for several seconds with no visibility is nerve wracking.

I realize that my truck is a different model, but it still has factory tires, I have not modified the ride height, or added any bug deflectors etc. that would alter the air stream. This seems to be a factory weakness for my truck.

It is sad when shallow puddles cause you to have to drive your big truck so slowly down the road that people in little sub-compacts are honking at you.
