Frame rust recall

Im at toyota now, they just told me U GETTIN NEW FRAME! Details to follow...

 

Had mine in this week. My frame looked decent to me when I crawled under. (minimal rust). They sprayed it with the black crap, gave me a rental pickup for 2 days while they did it. They washed my truck thoroughly before they sprayed it. (the truck was filthy when I dropped it off and shiny when I picked it up. On the receipt it showed they billed toyota 6hrs for the work. They oversprayed the sealant onto my exhaust so it smells terrible after about 15mins of driving. Hopefully that will go away in the next week when it burns off.

 

How many idiots does it take to change an oil pan gasket? I'm not sure but it's been 5 days so far. I'll let you know if I ever get my truck back.

 

Probably the same ones that smashed your radiator, burned your grille, and let the engine sit without the valvecovers on...

Yea there's no denying it anymore. This clearly isn't where you want to get your repairs done.

Like I said before, I think a.s. is really a Toyota rep trying to make us happier about our frame dilemmas . Kidding aside a.s., sorry to hear what you are going through. The dealership must have someone competent working in their service department, hopefully that is why they have had your truck so long, and why the cab was removed, that a competent person is now fixing your truck... unreal. You need to demand a better rental, and you definitely are owed more than just your unpainted fuel door installed for free.

 

Crawl under the drivers side with a screwdriver and a hammer. Tap the frame right next to the catalytic converter on the drivers side, see it it goes through. You must have a 10mm hole to qualify for frame replacement.

 

Day 22
Was able to pick up my truck last night, 5 minutes before they closed at 8pm. When I got there both the mechanic and service agent who have been working on it since day one were waiting for me. Apparently the tech had been working on my truck since 8am and he'd just got back from his 3rd test drive. There were obvious issues earlier because he said he had expected to get it to me by noon but things, "weren't right." I honestly didn't want to ask or keep this guy any longer. They both assured me all was good now.

I took it for a drive. Everything feels tight, gears are shifting smoother than when I dropped it off. The truck actually accelerates better than I ever remember so I'm happy with that. Stopped at a gas station so I could take a good look under some light. The grille was painted and looks great. The black gas cap cover looks pretty sweet too. Popped the hood- everything looks clean. Will have to wait for daylight to get under and make sure nothing is leaking.

So far so good ...so far. Will post pics of the final project after this weekend if everything stays together.

 

How long before your frame comes in?

 

They couldnt say, but im on the list. The dealer is doing 2-3 per week so im hopin they have their system down to science

 

Having the CRC applied over a year ago, I went under my Tacoma this weekend to change the oil and lube the chassis. I noticed one of the holes under the chassis, where a plug was added when they applied the CRC, wasn't seated right and it looked like there were bubbling around it. I removed the plug and found that they used a round plug for a rectangular hole. It didn't fit properly and looking like it was forced into the hole using the wrong plug. Around the hole, it was wet with rust and the CRC coating around it came off easily. The same plug on the other side looked good, without any bubbling and was seated correctly. I wonder if there should be a plug there or if not being seated correctly caused the water to collect around the hole. I also wondered, if they didn't add those plugs, would the water drain properly and not stagnate, causing more corrosion?

 

Interesting question. I'd give them a call and ask. Other than that area, how did the rest of it look? I had the CRC applied in August of 2014, so it's been about 17 months. I took a quick look under there and it appears to be holding up pretty good. Being that it's an 08 and is 8 years old now, I'm hoping it will last the life of the truck. At some point all these trucks will rust away.. I think the standard Toyota corrosion warranty is 5 years. If I can get another 8 years with a total of 280,000 miles, I'll be happy.

 

After four months the dealership finally has my frame in stock. They want to replace my water pump for $475, my rear main seal is leaking, just barely and they want to fix that for $615. Also, the dealership broke the bleed screw on my front caliper and corporate is refusing to cover it saying that it is my fault due to lack of maintenance. What do you guys say? I'd like to get my rear main seal fixed but the price seems steep considering the frame is totally dis-assembled and the part itself only costs $95.

 

If you can get the water pump and the rear main seal fixed somewhere else cheaper, tell them forget it and have it done somewhere else. The bleed screw sounds like bs to me. How much is the screw? Cant they get the broken piece out and just replace the screw? Or are they trying to nail you for a whole new caliper?
Who maintains their bleeder screws? I don't. Do you bring the truck there for schedule maintenance? If so, maintaining the brakes would be on them.

 

It's probably around 7 to 8 hrs under normal circumstances. So how much is the labor rate. They might have quoted you regular flat rate.

 

Screw is on them. 100% imo. Push it up the chain if the dealer dicks with you.

 

Are you near 100K miles? Does the water pump need replacing or is that a "suggestion?" Talk them down on the rear seal. Tell them you want it done for $400. Even if they say $500 it's cheaper than if you bring it somewhere else later. I think my cousin paid close to $800 to have his fixed a few years back.

 

Agreed. They tried to pull that shit on me with both tail lights when they broke during dissasembly. They can cover it under warranty. Be firm and say, "It was fine when I brought it in. If your mechanic broke it then you fix it." A little pushback is usually all you need to get it taken care of. Good luck.

 

The only other areas that I noticed needing coverage, was the back side rails, where the exhaust runs and the opposite side too. The rails on those sides are "ballooning", with the sandwiches metal expanding, because the corrosion is so bad it cause the rails to look like wavy "ballooned" strips. The CRC didn't get into those crevasses, so I applied fluid film where I could reach, so as to slow down the internal corrosion. Other than those 2 spots, the rest are holding up well and is still pliable, which helps to seal it from water. When I'm working under my truck, I make sure to wear old clothes, because that CRC rubs off if you make contact with the frame.

I think if you take care of your truck, you will get 8 more years. Living in Massachusetts, after winter snow storms, the sooner you get the calcium chloride off your frame the better. Did they install plugs on your frame after applying the CRC (front wheel wells + frame)?
