10 or 6 ply TIRES!?!?

I was going to grab some Bfg A/T tires today (265/70/17) but found out there are 2 different thicknesses. Should i go 10 ply or stay with 6? I tow a boat but regular tires do that job fine. Anyone have experience with either or can recommend one or the other? Other tires not an option btw. Thanks for any help in advance!

 

Go 6 ply, its all you need with the taco and you'll have better mpg as a result of the lighter tire.

 

I had the 10 Ply on my FJ Cruiser and they had really weird road manners. The truck REALLY wanted to go straight. When turning the wheel it really wanted to go back to center.

 

yup. i believe thats right. i have to get ten ply for my new tires and the gas mileage is going to suck. 6 ply for sure

So thats why my I get bad MPG and my tires way a ton. My dune grapplers are 10 ply

 

Go for 6ply whenever you can. 10ply are for fullsize work trucks. 3/4-1ton. Way too stiff of sidewalls. You will get a much better ride and perfomance from a 6ply.

a lot of 285s dont come in the 6 ply. Most of the tires im looking at are only in "E" rating which is the 10 ply.

 

I am going back to 6 ply on my next set. I lost 1-1.5 mpg but they are pretty tough. I have not had a puncture in my 10 plys. I noticed on the spec sheets that 10 ply can weigh 5-10 pound more on each tire and that in unsprung weight.

 

Why not get 8 ply tires? Balance both worlds...

 

For our trucks, wouldn't the only advantage of 10-ply be for some serious wheeling (aka rocks)? I may be wrong but it seems like they might have better resistance to tearing... Otherwise as for load limit the 6-ply should be more than adequate, as everyone else has said

 

I have the Wrangler Duratrac tire 265/70/17 in a 6 ply and taken them off roading in some rough terrain and have no problems.

 

The 2 ply sidewall makes allot of happiness!

I like the 10 ply... been running them on Toyota trucks for the past 26 years and have never had a flat or sidewall damage. The gas mileage takes a hit (always go up in size also) but it's a truck... didn't buy it to save money. I my experience the e rated track and handle corners better. The ride might be rougher but a lot of that can be adjusted with psi.

 

I always wonder how one finds these old ass threads and replies without realizing it.
