Not just an idiot driver. These things are battery powered. How would you like it if the battery died while you were driving on the highway and the engine shut off?

Seems like poor reasoning as I would think it would be rather easy to make that a non-issue. The truck should only care about the fob in two instances: upon start up and when you press the break to shift from park. Even with a dead fob, you can start the truck by touching the toyota emblem to the start button so I suspect the same could be done to shift to D if needed.

Hmm my maxima can be locked with the fob in my pocket, while running. My (old enough) kids usually stay in the car when I run into the gas stations for drinks. I lock the doors just because. The car never turns off.

Obviously the average person isn't that capable. They are capable of hiring a lawyer though...

The entire point of this conversation was that someone wants the truck to shut off if you leave it on by accident.

I've owned a few vehicles with push button start and all of them don't allow you to lock the doors with the power locks when running. I believe they do this to keep people from starting their vehicles and than locking themselves out of the vehicle with the keys inside. Makes perfect sense since the majority of our population are idiots and the manufacturers would take a beating publicily if thousands of people were locking their keys in the car regularly. I know in our Venza I can just lock the lock manually(not use power lock button) and it allows me to close the door and stay locked for the cold mornings when I am at the firehouse where I want the car to warm up before heading out. At the house I leave the doors unlocked. If someone wants the cars that bad, take it. It's why I pay insurance. lol Granted I do not think I will ever have that issue but if they want it bad enough they will get it regardless. I didn't know the Tacoma didn't come with the ability to unlock the doors with the door handle on the passengers side. That's pretty lame especially since most of their other models this is a feature. I too will often times open the door for my wife and having to pull the fob out kind of defeats the purpose of the proximity key. I love Toyota but this seems pretty typical of them to overlook. Was tossing around the idea of getting a TRD Pro 4Runner rather than another Tacoma. The 2016s still do not have push button start or a power lift gate which just left me scratching my head and ironically once you get used to these types of creature comforts you kind of expect them especially in the price point where they reside. Toyota always seems to miss the mark on small details on the trucks/SUVs which is odd because these are all things you will easily find on their sedans/coupes.

    Hey..Neoflex....
You do not need to pull out the fob to open the door for your girlfriend...!! Just program the driver's door handle to open ALL doors when you touch it.. Works for me..

Well that is just dumb, raise everyone else's insurance up because of that if something does happen. Not to mention insurance probably won't cover your claim if you left it running and unlocked knowingly, could be insurance fraud? They will know just by common sense on how things work in regard to the car running and the key as well as this thread detailing what you did.

I am not clear but it sounds like hitting the button on the door won't allow it to lock, can you use the key fob once out of it to lock it? I know on the Nissan's we have had you can get out with it running, hit the lock on the key fob and it will lock (then beep to let you know there is no key as you walk away but stay locked). Do the Tacoma's not allow you to lock it with the key fob and it running?

No they don't. As had already been said the only way to lock while running it is to use the key inside the fob to manually lock it.

He's trying to open the passenger door for his girlfriend. Like a gentleman does.

Having all 4 doors open when you touch the drivers handle is nice, but doesn't help in this particular situation.

Easy there buddy, I am not saying I am intentionally looking to have my car stolen, just saying if it were ever to get stolen that I likely wouldn't lose a lot of sleep over it. As I mentioned even with it running with the doors locked, if they really want it they will end up getting it. They can easily smash the window and drive off as the proximity key allows for that to happen. And where I live the likelihood of my car being stolen while warming up is slim to none hence why I do not worry about it. When I warm it up in the morning before leaving the firehouse after shift, yes as mentioned I do lock the doors as it would be more likely to happen there and maybe the locked door will be a deterrent, maybe not. But in the off chance something were to happen, the damn things insured as mentioned previously so I am not going to stress myself out over it. No need to get all up in arms about my morning routine. Not looking to make a fraudulent claim. There's just more important things to stress and worry about in life than to worry about the what if's when it comes to my vehicle being stolen. If someone wants it that bad, no matter what I do to deter them, they will likely be able to get it. None of my vehicles are that desirable so I am pretty positive no no one is wasting their time casing out my vehicles. lol My family comes first, everything else is just replaceable material BS.
OK back on topic. Yeah I was referring to being able to unlock the door from the passengers side so I can physically open the door for my wife.

One of my small complaints. I always open the door for my wife. This makes it a small pain in the ass. I was actually wondering if the limited trim had passenger touch unlock. If so, I'm sure it can be a fairly easy swap... Not sure how the electronics work.

It will drive but once you put it in park, you cannot shift out of park again without the fob again. Safety feature. Makes sense to me.

It will shift out of park, regardless of the FOB. Otherwise, how would you drive it if the fob battery was dead?

Does anyone know if touching the Toyota symbol on the fob will allow the truck to be started if the battery is removed. A dead battery typically has some small charge left in it and I was thinking that it just reduced the range or alternatively there is magnetic induction type reader (like the security badges we use at work) which only works at very close proximity.

I just posted based on what happened on my Lexus RX350. My wife had the fob in her bag. I dropped her off and drove away because I couldn't find parking. It started beeping as soon as she left but I didn't pay attention. I found parking about 2 blocks away and once I parked it, I couldn't get it out.

Maybe the Taco is different.. I will try it today.

Manual says if the battery is dead or the fob isn't communicating so I'd assume it would work without the battery.

The title of this thread just reminded me of my ancient past when push start meant your battery was dead and terms like pop the clutch.☺

This is my 4th Toyota with push button start. A friend that has a Rav told me she had the FOB and she got out of the vehicle and her husband took off on a couple hundred mile trip. He didn't realize he didn't have a FOB with him, until he shut off the car and then needed to start it again. Someone had to drive to his location and give him a FOB. Having the vehicle shut off, if the FOB wasn't in range would be a safety hazard. If one leaves the truck with the FOB it beeps, but I know, I'm immune to the beeps since I've had the push starts forever now. I had a 91 Toyota Celics GT convertible and if you left the key in the ignition you couldn't lock the door either. Had to carry a 2nd key, if I wanted to lock the door and keep the car running. I always appreciated that Toyota had that feature back then and I still do now.

Only issue I've ever had with a FOB was at a hotel in downtown TAMPA with my first car with push button start. Was probably 2006 or 7. It wouldn't work, but the valets had it all under control and touched the FOB to the button. We had to lock and unlock with the key. At that time, there were radio interferences in the area that prevented the FOB from working. Police station, radio station, etc. The Camry manual did make references to interferences like that, but we hadn't read it. Friends we met up with there had an Avalon and it did the same thing. A few years later we were there again, with a Prius with a FOB, but it worked okay. Assume changes were made in the area.
