I try to top off at 1/4 tank, often closer to 1/2. In 9 years I've seen the light once.

Nothing like a little additive in the tank to help the taco along :)

Based on what I was getting for average MPG about 2.32 gal remain. However, I've put more than 21 gal in it a time or two.

My light comes on with approximately 4 gallons left in the tank. I always hedge my bets and estimate about sixty miles in the tank if I need to push it that far before I fill up. I have pushed it to that once or twice and haven't run out yet.... (knocks on wood) On a handful of occasions I have actual put more gas in the tank than the stated capacity.

On mine light on = about 4 to 5 gallons left in tank. I average 20 MPG, light generally comes on around 330 miles driven.

You guys are killing me! I can't get more than 290-300 miles AT BEST! My light usually comes on around 280. I have been getting 15.5 MPG and have filled up 12 times since new (ignore signature, it won't update). I find it hard to believe anyone can get close to 20 MPG in the 2nd gen trucks! :anonymous:

I average just over 20 mpgs.

Are you running lifts, bigger tires, heavy bumpers etc?

Mines lifted 3" on 285/75/16 cooper ST maxx and during winter I have to fill up at about 260 miles (the light comes on around then), and during summer the light comes on around 280 miles of a full tank

Do you drive around like you are Mario Andretti?

I baby my trucks to get the best mpgs. I don't rev the engine and I usually don't drive over 60mph on the highway.

If you are driving carefully and easily then check your gas cap. Make sure it is sealing down properly. You can also try unplugging your battery and replugging it back in to reset your O2 sensors. I moved from high altitude CO down to the midwest with my old 250. mpgs crashed to 8-9, not kidding. I reset the battery and like magic I was back up to 12-14.
You are driving a new truck, I would play around with a few things and make sure you don't have a bad floater in the tank or bad O2 sensors. You want to find those kinds of things while you still have a warranty.

Also, do you live in a shady neighborhood? If so get a gas cap lock.
Or if you have one of those, go back to factory, the new one may not be sealing properly. Although 5mpgs is a lot for that to effect without throwing off your engine light.

Its definitely the tires, the stock BFGs weigh about 39 pounds, my ST Maxx weight 61 pounds per tire, so I definitely think it's the tires, I don't mind it though because it looks great and performs great offroad so to me its worth it. I do a lot of city driving though so that's also a factor in milage of course

On road trips and in an area where fuel stops are pretty regular I'll drive till the trip meter shows 350 miles. The light still isn't on. For daily commuting I rarely get much lower than 1/2 tank. I fill it up at least once a week and somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 is where it usually is. I volunteer on a SAR team and could get a call-out at any time. I keep a bag packed and try to keep 1/2 tank minimum in the truck at all times.

I started getting about 1 mpg better fuel mileage after about 60,000 miles. Can't explain why. Mine is a 2007 4X4 DC. I used to get 15-16 for daily driving and 18-19 hwy. I'm at 161,000 now and for the last 100,000 miles I've been getting 16-17 normally and just under 20mpg hwy.

Have never seen my low fuel light come on. Guess I did not run it low enough.

Guess I could review my Fuelly account history and see the most added for a fill up.

Hehe! I don't drive like my grandma and I probably have too heavy of a foot. MOST of my driving is short trips and my guess is the truck doesn't get totally warmed up. I live 6 miles from work. I am calculating the mileage by hand so I know it's accurate. One thing I do NOT know is the accuracy of my odometer. I have heard they aren't quite accurate with stock tires. I should check that because if it's off 10% that would add another 1.5 mpg's to my calculation.

    Just frustrating.

Sorry but it's not "urban legend", it's true, the fuel pump is cooled by the fuel in the tank not what passes thru it. Look at any schematic on fuel systems and you'll see that the pump is near the bottom of the tank, electric pumps are designed to push not pull. Running near empty can be done but it's hard on the pump because of heat.

As for the thread, I've put 18gal in, and have never seen the light come on.
