Frame rust recall

They busted the bolts on my upper control arms. Replaced without a peep. Hell, they agreed to pick up the tab on my rear transmission seal too... .. when in doubt, go up the power chain.

 

I asked to have brake pads done while my frame was being replaced. They found seized calipers and bolts, and replaced everything and put new pads on, no charge. Covered by Toyota.

 

I replaced the water pump myself at about 31,000 miles, when I noticed the coolant reservoir was almost empty, so they can go early. The 2.7L is very straight forward and doing it myself, saved me over $300. I bought a new water pump on Ebay and with the gasket sealer was under $50, then took my time while listening to the Patriots one Sunday last fall. The 4.0L will not be as easy, but still doable.

 

I have about 140k now. I haven't had to fix anything. Original water pump, exhaust, etc... Nothing. Did the front brakes at 70k and I'm on my 3rd set of tires.

 

As far as the Bleed screw is concerned - I'd tell them that I drove it in and the brakes were OK. I expect to be able to safely drive it out. Tell them you won't pay - or sign any paper work so they can get paid from Toyota until you can ... You did not "brake " this - no pun intended ...

 

Well had my truck looked at again today. they seen where the coating was coming off and reapplied those spots. Hopefully it will last this time but it's definitely something I am going to keep an eye on

 

Be wary and document.

I loved my red 2005 tacoma dbl cab, took it snowboarding, camping, and weekend bike trips with 3 kids, and numerous lowes and home depot stops.

I dropped off my tacoma on Oct 22, 2015, dch Toyota in Freehold. Being garage kept and with only 63k miles on it, I thought it'd be in and out. Didn't even get a loaner car. A few hours later I get the call that it needs a frame replacement, rust and a hole big enough to put a fist through and not safe for me to drive. I was flabbergasted, truly flabbergasted. Since it couldn't be driven, they would expedite the frame, and said it should come in in 2 months or so.

Dec 26th it was ready and I picked it up Dec 28th. I drove it 2 (two) MILES probably not even up to 40mph, and heard a bang, felt a big jolt like someone rear-ended me making a slow right turn on a rural street. Even made me instinctively look behind, no other cars around. The check engine light was on. I called the shop and bought it the 2 miles back.

Dealer looked at it, said the code error was for the left rear speed sensor, said they found no problems, said the light reset itself and they test drove it 22 miles.

I picked it up on Sat, Jan 2 2016, it did not act right, sometimes it would accelerate normally, others I'd have to push the gas almost all the way for it to slowly accelerate. Felt dangerous pulling into traffic, not knowing if it would accelerate normally or crawl up to speed. Check engine light came on with 2 hours of driving. I called Monday Jan 4, made appt for Tues Jan 5 when a loaner was available and dropped truck off again.

Received a call 2 days later. Not frame replacement related, harness within the transmission, "you have to remove the trans pan, its inside the wire harness which is inside the trans", nothing to do with the frame, "coincidental that it happened after doing frame repair". Need to order parts, wire harness and housing, and some terminals. With parts and labor, roughly $1,217 + tax.

2 MILES…. i drove 2 miles, coincidental after 63k problem free miles, it happened the 2 miles after the frame replacement…..

It's now escalated to a Case Manager at

and to Service Director at dealer.

 

Wow that's brutal... Sounds like somebody playing cover up for a stupid mistake

 

i wouldn't be surprised if the wire that plugs into the main harness got fubared during the frame swap. or if the main harness got screwed up.

 

Jeez man. Thanks for making me feel better about my experience. At least the dealership I delt with owned up to their fuck ups and fixed my truck. You're getting shafted. Obviously you realize this. Keep fighting those d-bags and get your truck fixed.

70k on your front brakes? That's really good. I've heard many people get around 40k on theirs. Mine might last to 70k, but everytime I press on the brake, it makes a loud "clack" sound, so I may replace them early.

 

They're just about ready to be replaced again, so at almost 140k, that's 70k from the original set and almost 70k from the second set. I do 95% highway back and forth to work. 40 miles each way. That's why they last so long.

 

The only other areas that I noticed needing coverage, was the back side rails, where the exhaust runs and the opposite side too. The rails on those sides are "ballooning", with the sandwiches metal expanding, because the corrosion is so bad it cause the rails to look like wavy "ballooned" strips. The CRC didn't get into those crevasses, so I applied fluid film where I could reach, so as to slow down the internal corrosion. Other than those 2 spots, the rest are holding up well and is still pliable, which helps to seal it from water. When I'm working under my truck, I make sure to wear old clothes, because that CRC rubs off if you make contact with the frame.

I think if you take care of your truck, you will get 8 more years. Living in Massachusetts, after winter snow storms, the sooner you get the calcium chloride off your frame the better. Did they install plugs on your frame after applying the CRC (front wheel wells + frame)?

Guys I need some advice, I tried sifting through the pages on this thread but didn't find what I'm looking for.

I'm looking at buying an 06 Taco. It spent the first 30k of it's life in Missouri, then the last 90K or so in Texas. Frame looks good to me, but I'll be bringing it back to Kansas if I buy it. Will I run into trouble with it 5 years from now after putting it through Kansas winters? There's typical surface rust but nothing like some of the pictures on here. I'm just concerned I'll be buying something I'll be stuck with down the road.

 

It's a Toyota. I wouldn't plan on keeping it more than 5 years.

 

That's a little harsh.
I would get the opinion of a good frame shop on the rust present . There are places to get it undercoated. Also if you can get it back to KS it would at least fall under the recall if you get it there by 3/31/16. Ultimately it's your money and your decision. Good washes help alot, like rinsing out the inside of the frame rails.

 

How much are you asking for yours?

Anyways I forgot to mention it's currently registered in oklahoma so it's eligible but I don't think it's bad enough to qualify

 

My understanding is that all can get the undercoat treatment.
