Planning on installing mine today, all I need to pick up is some RTV and red thread lock correct? Also what should I clean the old RTV off with before installing the new kit?

I am in the process of installing this product on my Tacoma. I am having trouble accessing the front two bolts holding on the shifter. There just doesn't seem to be enough room to fit a socket wrench or an open end wrench or anything. I also tried using a knuckle but nothing seemed to work. Any suggestions?

If I remember correctly, I took a hack-saw and bent the portion you're talking about out of the way. If I can, I'll remove my plastic and take a photo for you.

You can also access the bolts from under the truck using a ratcheting boxed end wrench.

Noob here so excuse my lack of knowledge. I have a base 2007 RC 122,xxx miles and when I shift it seems to have a hard time getting into gear. It doesn't grind or pop out of gear, just seems a little too much force to put it into first, the rest are a little smoother but not as I would like it to be. Just flushed and filled the trans oil this weekend and made a difference, but still not to my standards, which are not very high, lol! Anyhow, I was thinking maybe the stock plastic bushing or/& the extension ball might be worn out causing the hard shifting, will the URD help or even fix it? Any one here had same or some what this trouble? I should note this seems to happen more likely when running cold.

Not sure about your troubles shifting, but the URD short shift kit uses the stock plastic bushing that is already in your taco, so if you are thinking of replacing that plastic piece the URD kit does not include it.

Now that yall have had this URD short shifter on your tacomas for a few years, have any of you had an issue with the ball at the end of your shift stick falling off?

I found a thread the other day and like 4 or 5 people commented on there talking about their shift stick ball breaking off due to the increased stress this kit puts on it. Just wondering if it is a more wide spread issue and if I should consider a more expensive short shifter that replaces more of the components than this kit does. (By the way, I have this kit ordered, it wasn't in stock so I've been waiting a couple weeks now. I found the thread about the shift stick ball's breaking off after I ordered it, so now I am having reservations...)

I haven't had any issues with mine, and I drive like a bat out of hell. The end link actually break off? That seems highly unlikely... Unless you're slamming your shifter around I can't see you breaking it.

Has URD responded to what? I've gotten a couple one word responses via email about when it may ship since they were out of stock and correcting my shipping address since I'm an idiot and order things while falling asleep. But homer taco responded to a pm and said he had the URD SS for 90k miles and 3 years. So I feel reassured.

URD has been shipping the URD 1GR Short Throw Shifter for 11+ years. A lot of those kits are out in the field. In those 11+ years I have had six people call me and report that the stock shifter ball had snapped off with out kit installed. 6 in 11+ years. Yes it has happened.

Now here is the interesting thing. I get more calls from people that do not have our kit installed and had the stock ball snap off and want to know if our kit will repair their stock shifter. Unfortunately it will not.

From the people that have contacted me the stock shifter is a problem, the ball tip can snap off if or if you do not have our kit installed. It seems that this stock tip snapping off is more likely to occur if you do not have our kit installed just based on all the phone calls we get at URD.

If you do have our kit installed and the stock ball snaps off, there are two ways to fix this, 1. get a new stock lever and reinstall our parts; 2. You can weld our parts to the stock lever and that is a solid repair.

What we do get a lot of calls about is people failing to properly complete the installation. It is critical you use red locktite and stake the set screws on the extension with a center punch like it says to do in the instructions. Do not shortcut here because if you do, you will have a problem down the road most likely in a very inconvenient time.

6 reports of this in 11+ years with thousands of kits in the field should not scare anyone from installing the kit to improve your driving enjoyment.
