OEM Oil Filter??

Just changed my oil for the first time and I cut open the OEM filter to check it out. Has anyone did this?

What kind of media is inside? Looks real crumbley. Like it could crumble and get inside the engine. It's some kind of suspended, hard but porous media of some kind held together with a plastic housing.

That didn't look very good to me. I use WIX for all my vehicles. The WIX was about 1/2" shorter but that's OK.

Does anyone know anything about this? This filter looks like something Toyota uses for start-up purposes?? The Toyota filter in Chris4x4's tutorial looks the same on the outside but is clearly different at the gasket area and the media inside the hole. Looks like a paper filter.

 

How about a pic and the part number ?

 

You know, if you are into all that perhaps on your next change out, do it at 3K pull the filter, cut it open and send the pic's , then on to 5K, 7,500K. Might be nice to see the difference with the added mileage.... just an idea.

All I know is the last two filters I got at the dealer were different sizes... shifty

Scroll all the way down and you'll see them. These are the oil filters made in Japan, one of the best filters that money can buy.

I wonder why Toyota USA isn't buying these any more...moved to something cheaper?

 

That is the only filter I use for my truck, pricey but it is superior to the one imported from Thailand IMO.

 

The bottom line (i.e. to save money) is why they did it.

 

Hmmmm interesting. I ordered some Toyota OEM oil filters for my truck a few months back. So you guys are saying there are different kind of OEM filters for our trucks that Toyota makes?

 

Yes, they will be different. These are imported directly from Japan while the ones you get at the dealer are usually made in Malaysia or Thailand.

 

^ I agree with Chris. If you change your oil and filter on a regular basis it really doesn't matter what oil and/or filter you use.

I don't entirely agree with that but since I hate "my oil is better than yours!" threads I'll leave it alone. But generally, yeah, if you change your oil regularly you will have less, if any, problems.

 

Hey chris did you say you changed yours every 3000 or 5000?

 

I do agree that changing the oil and filter often is the key to engine life. There are some filters that are just better than others.
One of the sites list the filter elements after disecting many filters and you do need a filter with a by pass.....you just cannot go wrong with a quality filter, no matter who's it is. Any good oil will do the trick . Syn or dino.....I just prefer syn for its cold and heat property's.

So I guess the conclusion to the filter issue is that it is a very good filter as opposed to a bad filter. Then that is the kind of filter you want on a new engine. There were no metal that I could see on the media.
