I love swigging Makers Mark at the helm of a 38' boat under spinnaker surfing down the face of a wave.

You must be confusing me with one of the other confused people in the world...

I was thinking more along the lines of the commercial I just saw for the new movie WANTED with Angelina Jolie where she is walking away with a bareback full of tattoos!

Brokeback is what you get in Montana when the sheep don't go over the fence like they're supposed too. ;)

I don't ever race on Mondays or Wednesdays. Always on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Some fun racing on Fridays and occasional "serious" races on weekends.

Last weekend we were sailing in the annual Bristol to Montauk race which is about a 90 mile 'round trip. We were in great position heading out of the bay with just one boat ahead of us which we expected to pass during the night on the down wind spinnaker run home. We had 15 to 17 kt breeze and 2 to 3 ft seas. I was on the helm, we were making 7.5 kts right on course for the south of Block Island, it was one of those storybook perfect moments.

Bang! Well not really a bang but without warning the clew (The part that the control ropes attach to) tore out of the jib leaving it suddenly flapping uselessly on the fore-stay.
We furled the sail and the captain wanted to continue the race but now we were only doing 4.5 to 5 kts and sailing 20 degrees off our intended course which would add about 40 to 50 miles to our race. We tacked and ran up the spinnaker hoping to be able to go over the north end of Block. We were back over 7 kts but due to the sea state we couldn't keep the big sail drawing on a high enough point of sail to be useful and we'd have to sail about 80 miles out of the way to complete the race.

We decided that it would be a good idea to withdraw from the race and enjoy a spirited run home. As beers and my flask (for medicinal purposes) were handed out I turned down wind and Black Widow FLEW. We were all disapointed in not finishing the race but I'm still glowing from surfing down the front of those waves at close to 10 kts.... Priceless

I typically scan longer posts just looking for highlights, but yours I consistently read.

Do you have any pictures or video that you could post? You gotta keep a camera on board to record some of this stuff!

i have no idea what you just said or how many of those words you just made up on the spot just to piss me off, but whatever is going on it sounds like teh most fun anyone can ever have on the water! i spent last weekend on a really badass Moobius ski boat with a 350cu vortech and that was a good time but i'd love to sail. me and my roommate have never set foot on a sailboat before but we are looking at craigslist to find a cheap one we can take out on the lake. something small to learn on. i mean, how hard can it be? you put a sheet in the air and the wind pushes you around. we should be able to figure it out in less than 1 hour and 6 beers all by ourselves.
