I have a 2015 Tacoma I4. Bought it 5 months ago and i've noticed the engine coolant has a dropped down some. Not much but noticeable. I know the reservoir tank has a breathable cap, is it common to lose some coolant because of this?

I would check the front of block for coolant trickles.....My water pump went out at 40K.

If you're not seeing pink spots on the ground and the reservoir is still at least 1/4 full after 5 months, that's barely enough to call it a leak. But apparently your rig is losing coolant somewhere.

Does the level keep going down, a tiny bit at a time? Or did it go down once and has stayed at the same lower level? That would indicate between a small leak and a one-time odd event. I would not worry about it too much but do keep an eye on it.

To answer your question, we might be losing a tiny amount of coolant through the reservoir cap but should not be enough to even notice. Mine has been at the same level for two years.

Here is the level cold. Has not really changed after the initial drop.

Mine was leaking at the top hose connection to the overflow reservoir. I added a clamp.

How full is it hot? Overall as long as it's between the 2 marks, no issue. Incline etc will change how much is in the reservoir.

It's right below the full line on the reservoir tank when hot.

Are you noticing any thick white smoke out of the tailpipe? If so does it smell sweet? This could indicate a blown head gasket and you could be burning coolant. Level probably would have gone down further after initial drop but just something to look out for.

No, my truck doesn't exhibit any of those symptoms. I think it might have been a one time occurrence. Have been monitoring for a couple weeks without any noticeable drop. May get the dealership to pressure test the system to ensure my cap isn't leaking at intense / high pressure driving conditions.

Yea I would definitely suggest a pressure test, definitely doesn't sound like blown head gasket.
