Got the form letter today and had to laugh. Toyota says if you experience accelerator pedal interference you should follow the steps they list in the notice. I can see it now, cruising along at 65 MPH and "ohno:eek:!!! my accelerator pedal is experiencing interference!!! " Let me see what did Toyota say to do?? They said to follow their recommended steps, but they left one step off the end of the list. That would be to kiss your ass goodbye because of the time you wasted trying to pull the mat back and dislodging it from the pedal:pray:. At any speed, time is critical and not panicking is crucial. Hope there are no other accidents due to this accelration problem.

I got the letter last week.

More importantly, I heard on the radio today that they're going to replace the gas pedal in the cars recalled. Here's the AP Story I just found. I'll get it done... zero cost to me, and while I don't think it's necessary, the guy who buys the truck next might want to see that it was done.

I'm thinking that my original "uncut" gas pedal might be worth something in 50 years.

Yeah, it's all over the news today. I'm not taking either of my affected vehicles ('07 Camry & '09 Tacoma) in for the dealer "modifications" (cut the bottom off your existing pedal and possibly remove foam padding/insulation under carpet near pedal), but I MIGHT take them in next spring when the replacement pedals are available. I've seen my dealer service dept's handiwork - and there's no way I'm going to let them hack up my pedal & floor for this.

That "smart brake" brake override system should have been standard all along on all of these vehicles given that they are all now "drive by wire" throttles. How hard could it be to program the ECU to kill the throttle when the brake is applied? It's all electronic. Braking already kills the cruise control if it's set... it's basically the same thing. I also wonder why they are only adding it to the Camry, Avalon and Lexus models as a part of this recall. Why not the Tacoma? Eh... I don't care. I have the factory floor mats installed and secured properly... there's NO WAY they can interfere with the pedal... it's not a problem.

I agree-I don't see how the floormats could interfere with the factory mats or my WeatherTech mats.

Toyota has made it a recall because they like their customers. Even though human error is behind the recall, Toyota decided that they would see what they could to to prevent future episodes in similarity. As of 11/25/09 Toyota will redesign accellerator pedals in those vehicles that are affected by this recall. 2007-2009 Tacoma owners will recieve 2 different notices. The first is to cut the pedal down and reshape it making it shorter. While that is being done they will be fabricating new accellerator pedals for all of the recall vehicles. Notices to go out to the owners for the first recall is slated for January 2010 and the second notice will go out in March of 2010. Those who have the reconfiguration of the pedal performed will also qualify for a pedal replacement should they choose to do so.

For those of you who do not know why the recall came into effect. 4 people were killed in a Lexus is250 with the all weather mats stacked on top of the factory carpet mat that caused the accellerator pedal to stick down and hold the throttle wide open. The vehicle went to pass on the highway and the pedal got hung up in the mat and caused the vehicle to accellerate to 125mph. A very sad and unfortunate incident. Toyota will also be coming out with an alternate kill switch for vehicles equipped with smart keys in the almost immediate future. Engineers are working the kinks out now.

Even though the packaging for the all weather mats state to use only one mat in the vehicle, especially in the drivers area and secure properly, this accident still happened. Any other manufacturer would have said too bad so sad. Toyota on the other hand came up with a fix that is costing them millions of dollars, to keep it's customers safe. Aren't you glad you own a Toyota?

I only read the initial post so if I have duplicated someone, I apologize.

Throw the vehicle in nuetrol, pretty easy fix. Let the damn engine blow! You will live to tell about. Pretty much common sense but most people do not have that anymore. They have to be told everything.

I heard that some Toyota vehicles had this problem and they had the proper mats. Also some said the pedal stuck and it had nothing to with the mat. They think it could be a problem with the ECU when it comes to the vehicle controling the speed. Heard it on the radio down here in SoCal 640am. Good station, its talk radio type.

Toyota as well as other people such as the NHTSA has performed several tests as well as the government and at this time there is no data whatsoever to show anything in fault of electronics, engineering, design or otherwise. There is however alot of heresay reflecting to several areas. But no proof of malfunction as of yet by any of the parties that have done testing. Trust me if there was any proof of electronic malfunctioning or otherwise the media would be ALL over it. Toyota is probably the most scrutinized vehicle manufacturer in the US. Marketing propaganda, always trying to knock Toyota off it's pedastel. Remember this a voluntary recall, noone as of yet has said anything about Toyota HAVING to fix anything.

Toyota takes care of its customers, that for sure. This is a voluntary recall, alot different than what other manufactures get slammed with by the car police (institute of highway safety).
    It will be fine.

Your local dealer should have onhand, free replacement clips should yours have broke or otherwise. Even if you pulled them out when washing your carpet and lost them, Toyota will still give them to you. Toyota has supplied ALL of it's dealers with these free of charge, even to the dealer. If your clips actually tore or pulled out of the carpet itself, and your dealer is going to do the right thing by getting new carpet, then kudos to your dealer for doing the right thing. That's about a 800.00 carpet! Once those grommets tear out getting new carpet is about the best you can do.

Good to hear...I just know that there are a couple of complaints out there that exist and they claim it had nothing to do with a carpet. I've always owned Toyotas and can not find a reason to by anything else for myself. They are just all around the best bang for your buck! change the oil and they'll run for ever!!!!!!!!! Every one else is just hating.
