Does auto tranny actually "learn" your driving style and is "break-in" a real thing?

I have heard a lot of people say that after you get the first few k on their auto 3.5L that the transmission and throttle seam to "learn" their style of driving. Also that the off-the-line power gets better. I am wondering if this actually a REAL thing Toyota engineered or perhaps it is just a psychological factor of people becoming used to the new driving dynamics over time. Anyone have any real insight?

 

probably a little of both, but mine seems to be a bit more responsive and better mpgs.

 

Its common for a modern automatic transmission to do that. Not just Toyota and not just Tacoma.

 

I have 8300 miles on mine now, and it is completely different than when I first got it. The auto shifting has certainly changed and it does not feel like I am riding a wild horse anymore. The power is definitely there when I need it, you just have to get used to pushing down farther on the pedal.

The Taco is NOT like any other vehicles that I have had, it just took some time to get used too.

You can take it to the stealership and clear the memory and restart the memory. I had mine do it while it was in one time didn't charge me. Gave my guy $20 gift card to local BBQ. It's amazing what you can get done on your veh when you feed the machanic.

 

The transmission learns nothing you simply get used to how it drives.

 

The computer just maps your driving and will slightly adjust to your style of driving. It's not going to shift into 3rd at the exact rpm every time and there are many variables that effect shift points and things. Plus any mechanical component is going to wear in a little after a bit and everything settles in. It's a combination of things.

A lot of it as in people's heads too. When you come from a different vehicle, especially a different manufacturer you get used to how something drive and feels. When you buy something new, your not used to how it feels and operates. Over a time period you adapt to the new vehicle.

I think it's actually more of a shock to some of these people coming from a second gen because they like to think that the truck are pretty much the same with the exception of a few thing. But in reality changing the suspension and powertrain changes the feel of the drive more than some of them think. You can't expect it to drive like your old Tacoma because it's just not that.

All in all after a few months people get used to it and it's normal to them. I had a 1st gen and I love that truck. When I drove the second gens I didn't like how they drove, having driven multiple year tacomas. So instead of simply buying one and bitching about it, even though I would get used to it, I went with the frontier which I liked overall better.

I do like the 3rd gen and I hope I like the way they drive and feel. I really like the looks, and midsize to me seems to be a lot better in the snow and off-road. I don't want to take one home yet as I have a few months before I get rid of my f150.

Asking for someone else since I have a manual.... If your battery dies or you replace it, will it have to learn again?

Let me rephrase.... My dad has an auto, and I want to know for him, if the battery gets disconnected will it have to relearn or does it have some kind of button cell battery backup on the computer to hold it?

 

Sorry man and I wasn't trying to be a jerk, it should store that info, only thing that would change that is if the ecu was reflashed by the dealer
