Both variants are close to the same price without any options aside from the tow package. I live in GA and currently have a 2006 TRD OR AC V6 4x2 with 279k miles that has never let me down. However, with the mpg bump on the new tacomas, and low gas prices, I'm considering the 4x4 as well as 4x2 for my next truck. Is it worth going 4x4 without a locker considering that I live in GA, and it snows like once every 2 years? How is the 4x4 mpg after break in? Can I get 370 miles out of a tank? I commute about 350 miles a week and I'd like to avoid refueling more than once a week. My current truck still gets 370 miles a tank b4 the light turns on.

    Thanks in advance!

Meet yourself in the middle and get a SR5 4x4.

Not sure if you off road much as well but I would pick the 4x4 all day.

    Pros:

Its better to "have and not need" than to "need and not have".

Resell value somewhat better (compared to the 4x2) even though it seems that you like to hold on to your vehicles.

    Cons:

No locker (Can always add an aftermarket locker when, if available for 2016s, although not factory)

*I can't speak much as to mileage. I would assume a better mileage on the 2016 but the added weight of the front differential will likely result in the same mileage now? Is your commute mostly highway miles or mixed?

I've never driven in snow but I would imagine careful driving and 4x4 at certain times would circumvent the need for a locker (in the once in a blue moon it does snow there lol)

I am in the same dilemma as you.I live in Ga.as well and can't decide on DCSB SR4X4 or DCSB TRD OR 4X2.I have an atv so when I go to the woods I typically just haul the atv.I currently have an 03 w rear locker and it seems to be all I have needed in the past..The SR is a great value but the OFFROAD is sure appealing with the extra amenities..

It's a lot easier to add off-road suspension/locker to an SR than it would be to add 4x4 to a non-4x4 truck

If youve gone 279k without a strong desire for 4wd, get the OR and save yourself pining for upgrades. Theyre both nice trucks, but it sounds like 4x4 is kind of a waste for you. Resale value won't hurt quite so badly if you're selling it eventually in a state that hardly gets snow.

With the OR 4x2 you will still get the rear locker. Also you will get push button start, larger touch screen, center info cluster, better seats(I think),better braking system,OR suspension, fog lights, more desirable wheels and tires, fender flares and probably a few other items..Also keep in mind Insurance may be a little cheaper, less maintenance, and a little better fuel mileage..

Actually, I'm really only interested in the locker, brakes, and suspension on the OR. The tech features, while nice, are not necessary. The seats look the same, with different fabric, and the wheels, while nice, can always find better. I think I'm swaying to the 4x4 SR if MPG mixed is truly 19-20. My commute is mainly a hwy crawl on 400 south.

I went with the SR, i live in new england we get shit tons of snow 4x4 will be used. Push to start is nice its the only option i wish the SR had. Personally i dont like the black fender flares on the offroad. Whats more capable stock a 4x2 offroad or a base 4x4???

370 miles on one tank of gas 4x4 or not is great gas milage. I only get about 270. If all hwy miles, then about 300 miles to the tank. I wouldnt get a new truck if yours is good. Run it into the dirt man. Maybe wait a year or 2 bedore purchasing. Idk.
Oh and as far as 4x4 only if your going to need it or use it otherwise its not worth the additional maintenance.

4x4 with open diffs will always be more capable that 2WD, even with a locker.

I was looking at the specs, and it doesn't appear that the OR brake differ from the others. Looks like they are all the same....

Like OP said, I'm pretty sure the trd brake upgrade is a factory add-on, not a part of a trd package. I had the option for a trd brake upgrade when I bought my sr5.

4x4 is actually 3 wheel drive right?
then with a locker in a 4x4 it would be true 4wd

I went SR 4x4. I didn't feel like the upper trims had enough difference to warrant the price but that's entirely my opinion. The only thing I definitely do miss is the fog lights, which I plan to add.

I would never buy a non-4x4 truck though. That's an almost laughable notion in Colorado.

Not quite. 4wd is actually 2wd. 4wd with locker is 3wd. Lockers all around is 4wd.

I know @chris4x4 said it some where...
    He explained it well.

I thought when a non-TRD 4x4 is engaged, the front wheels are locked?
Or is a non-TRD 4x4 have two "open" difs?

Non trd trucks have an open diff (front) and a "limited slip" diff (rear) which isn't quite a locker, but still functional in the snow. This may only apply to 2nd Gen trucks, though.
