Hey people, this is my first post on the forum, so bear with me.

I recently inherited a 2004 Tacoma Xtra Cab, V6 from my son who passed away last month. It's a high mileage vehicle with 475K miles on the odometer, so I'm not really sure what to do with it. I will be taking it in for a safety assessment to get an idea of what it will cost to pass inspection and will also head for a dealer for the spare tire plate recall since the plate is gone from this vehicle.

Also will be doing, or having done, a close inspection of the frame for rust. I don't know if he ever took it in for the initial recall that he received so I'm hoping he did that.

Any suggestions on what to do with this vehicle would be much appreciated.

    Tnx, Larry

Sorry for your loss. The mileage tells me that your son must have kept up on the maintenance of his truck. These are great trucks and they do hold their value compared to other similar vehicles. There is a Toyota website that you can type in the VIN for recall info pertaining to that truck. I'm sure someone will chime in and post the link or you could Google it. Once again sorry to hear about your son.

Thanks for the tip and the kind words. I did check out the outstanding recalls on the Toyota web site and the only one that came up was the spare tire thing. Apparently there is no way to find out which recalls have been closed on this vehicle so I emailed Toyota with that question. I think it's important to find out if he did take it in for the frame rust recall treatment since there was a 2010 deadline for that part of the recall. I believe he did, in fact, keep up with the maintenance since the engine runs fine. He just had the timing belt service done in November.

The truck is actually in pretty good shape considering it was my sons work truck which he drove every day, including most weekends, in all kinds of Maryland weather.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
That's some crazy mileage, these things really do last forever! Yeah I too recommend joining that site and getting some info on it. Other than that drive it and enjoy it, it'll probably go another 400k if you take care of it. Deeply sorry for your loss, I can't imagine going through something like that as a parent, that really bites hard.

Hi, and soory for your loss, I can't imagine.

Is this truck a 5-speed and/or TRD? If so, that increases its value. Post some pics when you have time to do it. Especially frame and suspension.

The most potentially dangerous issue on these is the lower ball joint (LBJ) recall on some models during 2001-04. If you call Toyota with the VIN, they can check to see if the work was performed. Evn then, these should be checked and inspected carefully. Failure at higher speeds could be deadly.

The other wear item to check is the T-belt, every 90k miles. If it fails, no huge deal, as this is a non-interference engine.

Appreciate the kind words. It's a TRD V6 w/automatic tranny. I'm gonna crawl under the truck today and take necessary pics and then post some other pics as well. Exterior condition is pretty good. One spot where someone did a little bondo job (not rust repair), but that should be easy for an body shop to correct.

In his stack of maintenance records I see that he had the front ball joints replaced by an independent, but that was quite some time ago. I'm having an independent assessment done this week by my favorite local mechanic before I contact the dealer so that's one thing they will check. Timing belt service was performed just 2 months ago.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

If you sign up for this site using the vin number it will tell you everything that toyota has done to the truck. This is what I used to make sure the LBJ was done on my truck after I bought it. I believe it would tell you if the rust prevention was done.

Actually I did that and found that spare tire plate recall was still open. That site only shows active recalls for your vehicle.

Well, it clearly says that past recalls that have been completed (or expired I guess) are not available through that page.

Basically it continues to say contact them [which I have done and am awaiting a response] to find out about past recalls that may have been completed.

If you go under parts and service then service history it will show all past things done to your truck.

Yes I did that also and it said I that VIN had no history. That suggests to me that he never took it in for the frame rust recall. That doesn't surprise me since he took the truck to independents for his services and I saw no dealership receipts at all in his records. The final word on that will have to come from Toyota. Appreciate your help!

I really hope he went through the proper steps for the frame recall, because if so that frame would be a go on a new one from toyota....its shot.

Ahh ya beat me to it...thats really too bad he never took it in for the frame...
