If he didn't launch explain the physics of Gio going backwards to me? However, what does "launch" have to do with this? I used the word I understand because he did, but even if he didn't it's still a dirty penalty. You can not LEAD or STRIKE the opponent with the crown of your helmet. He clearly does that.

 

So many different criteria. Sheesh. Reminds me of this scene.

If the bungle didn't shift at the last second, Shazier would have hit him with the shoulder in the chest. Look at his hands. See how his left hand doesn't even touch him? He was set up to hit him in the chest with his shoulder. The bungle shifted and came down in a fraction of a second and Shazier couldn't adjust for it. It was incidental.

 

Why does Shazier lower his head and point the crown of his helmet at Gio? That's basic tackling 101 that has been taught to players for over 20 years. Keep your head up.

Unless of course you want to crown someone and knock them out..

Shazier didn't line up on him. So, not all three components were present, therefore no foul.

How does one line somebody up that shifts directions before the hit?

 

Wouldn't you need to "line someone up" to make forcible contact, isn't that just a normal part of making a solo tackle outside the tackle box?

 

So, you're saying that the Rule is a joke. You don't need first or second, if third happens, that's all that is needed. Plus, if they're gonna be such pussies about it, why not enforce the rule on the entire field. What's this crap about the tackle boxes? Either it is unsafe, or it is not.

No, I'm saying they all happened here.

My guess on why they specify outside the tackle box is that there is too much incidental inside the tackles, ie: a 3rd and 1 play where everyone is trying to get extremely low. There is no intent there but helmet to helmet happens.

 

Because not every tackle involves lining a player up, swarming tacklers, shoestring, diving, etc. However, if you are outside the tackle box one on one and are going to make a solo tackle.. you line up your target. Shazier does all of that and then chooses to lower and strike with his crown.

 

It doesn't matter AT ALL but, I just called my staff into my office and asked them to watch the youtube video I posted. 1 of them was a semi pro Rugby player who also played college football at Texas State, the other two are just fans. We all agree the Bengals were dirty, we have no skin in the game either way.

Unanimously all 4 said penalty and dirty.

Shazier has made that tackle a hundred times and will not lower his head to strike with the crown in 99 of them. You're taught from pee wee league to keep your head up, keep your eyes on the target. You only lead with the crown to deliver a pop and attempt to injure or dislodge the football.

Cheap.

We're all pretty passionate football fans.. and we chat throughout the day on a varying level of topics. I showed them the video and asked "Penalty not dirty, no penalty, penalty dirty" I didn't preempt it with anything. One of them had seen the play and already came to his own conclusion.
