what options did you get and are they worth it?

i'm buying a 2010 Tacoma in January. My bro in-law talked me into a V6, even though i plan to never haul bricks. not sure if it's worth it for me to get the off-road TRD package. i'm not an off-road guy, at most i'd be driving on a snowy road twice a year on the way back from snowboarding.

i plan to get some aftermarket wheels, so i'd rather get the package with the plain wheels, but you seem to miss out on little things such as the overhead console with temp gauge and compass.

although i've read the Toyota website several times, is there something i need to know about option packages?

and the V6 is waaayyyyy better than 4cyl

 

mine has the offroad package i just like how its higher off the ground than most i lifted mine anyways though idk about the stock ones but mine has a diff lock that comes in handy in my opinion it gives it a meaner stance to it have the trd lift and not to mention the trd stickers on it are sweet. Mine is a head turner specially since i lifted it more than what it was i always get stares id go with the trd package but totally up to u. mine has the temp gauge and direction indicator as well.

Upgraded seats from TRD package are worth it, especially as I drive 1/2 way across the country twice a year.

Double-cab was my only real option as we have a 4 year old and must have room for her car seat.

Long bed was my choice since most of the "truck work" I do involves tossing stuff in the bed - lumber, mulch, sand, plants, play houses, bikes for the neighborhood kids, etc. I figured if I got the LB I'd never wind up wishing it was shorter... whereas with the SB I'm sure I would frequently want some extra room.

I got a Prerunner because I just don't like the look of the 5 luggers... too short, headlights look funky without some height under the body to balance them.

All those led me to thee TRD Sport package as I'm also not much of an avid off-roader. I'm very happy with my truck

I looked at both the Sport and Offroad. The Sport's hood scoop looks nice and all, but the thought of a fake scoop just didn't settle well with me. I went with the TRD Offroad with the beefed up suspension and tow package. It has all the bells and whistles...no blank switches on this one! It was more money, but I've never regretted it.

 

I have a base model double cab 4x4. I just didn't need any of the extra accessories included in the TRD packages....
I added tinted windows so I could go with the level I wanted.
I got the wheels/tires I wanted without paying extra for the factory alloy wheels only to get rid of them, I did sell the steelies for a little cash.
I added Wet Okole seat covers, so no need for the TRD 'upgraded seat material'.
I added an aftermarket stereo and speakers, nicer and cheaper than the JLB system.
It comes with electric windows/locks/mirrors. Fog lights and intermitent wipers I don't need, but simple to add.
Compass and temp can be added with an aftermarket mirror.
Keyless entry can be added cheap along with an alarm.
I don't need a locker or LSD, 4x4 does just fine for my needs.
I think everything else is just cosmetic unless I missed something.

TRD OC (non-JBL), dbl cab, 4x4, DRL. When it comes time to trade, factory options far out weight aftermarket. Most people don't want a hacked up truck.

I picked the offroad over the sport because I didn't see any need for a non-functioning hood scoop, it's not my thing anyway, and the 16" wheels should mean a little cheaper replacement rubber when it comes time. Certainly better than the 18s that were on my 4Runner.

 

Options I like on the Off-road are:

Smoked Headlights vs. stock on Sport
Rear Locker vs. LSD on Sport
OR Rim style vs Sport style
TRD seats vs stock (big difference in comfort IMHO, not material but actual seats)
Power outlet vs none stock (nothing great, but for my needs it is perfect)
Backup Camera - I really like it and use everytime I am in my truck
ATRAC vs TRAC - gives better traction in 4-lo when used
Steering Wheel controls vs stock
Multi-CD vs Single
Bluetooth if you get a Double Cab


I drove all 3 Sport, OR & SR5. In RI, the roads suck ass so the sport gave a terrible ride on the road. Between the suspension and the tires, just bad. OR felt 100x better. Still felt stuff, but nothing like the Sport. Had I lived in a state that actually cared about the roads this choice could have been harder. I did like the scoop on the Sport and the color matching but the ride sucked. The SR5 rode better on the road than the Sport but OR was better.

A SR5 can come with the camera, upgraded rims to give it a boost.

In the end, you will have to decide if the TRD extra costs (both are very close) is in your budget. If yes, then decide on where you will be taking your truck. If not, SR5 is the way and add in the items you want. But if might just come to the TRD price tag anyways if you go nuts.

i just re-read the toyota site AGAIN and i didn't notice anything about that.

i've been driving my Integra since 1990, and presumably, i'll have this truck 20 years, so i want to be sure.

I would go with a TRD package, whether it be the Sport or Offroad. IMO if you're going to spend 25k+ on a truck, it should be loaded. The seats alone are worth it. I hate the chrome on the offroads, and don't do enough offroading to justify having a locker (locker ain't for snow). I also didn't really notice i difference in ride quality between the sport and OR, they both rode very well to me.

 

Drive a couple different ones. I saw no difference in comfort between the SR5 and TRD seats and I'm someone who's had lower back surgery. Something like that is very subjective so make sure it's what you want.

Having said that, if I had it to do over again I'd probably get the Sport package but for other reasons than the seats. STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS!

I didn't get 4X4 because I have absolutely no need for it here in SC and I simply wouldn't take my daily driver offroading. I'd buy a different vehicle for that if I were so inclined.

 

I love the hood scoop, seats, steering wheel controls, 6 disc cd changer and color key mirrors and bumpers on my sport.

 

I went from a '96 to an '09. Because I got a spectacular deal on it, I have the TRD Sport package. It's a 4X4, V6, 6spd. From my personal experience, ALWAYS go for the bigger engine. The guys above are correct about the seats - the TRD package seats are really nice. Actually the interior of the truck is almost TOO nice for a truck. Which transmission you pick is your choice. I have the 6spd in my Tacoma, and we have an FJ that has the auto trans. Of the 2, I prefer a manual, although I don't see a real benefit in this 6spd over the old 5spd, but that's neither here nor there.

As for the TRD Sport package, It drives very, very nicely on the pavement. For sure. With the VSC and LSD, it just plain doesn't slip where my older Tacoma had problems. The ABS has already paid for itself, but that's standard anyway.

My advice - get whichever TRD package fits your need. If I'd had a choice with my deal, I would have gotten the off road, but I didn't, so I'm happy with the sport. Really. It's very nice, and once I put more aggressive tires on it, it will do the light off road stuff just fine for me. What I'm saying is, get one of the TRD packages rather than a non-TRD. Just my $.02!

 

Smoked headlights are on the Sport, too.

 

It states...."sport seats with driver lumbar support and sport fabric trim (in place of Standard bucket seats)" for both TRD packages.

My non sr5/non trd has driver lumbar support, but has a different fabric than the TRD. I guess 'sport seats' are shaped different?? I didn't notice and since I have Wet Okole seat covers on mine I haven't had any issues with the material or them wearing/sinking.
