Yes, I know they are Air operated. But, they ARE drum type brakes. :)

Useing this logic, most people should be driveing Corvettes, Porshes, and other sports cars?

No. Air opperates the brakes in a rig, just like the oil operates them in our trucks. There are other small details that are different, but in a rig, the compressed air pushes a piston out driveing the brake shoes into the drum. In the Tacoma, Brake fluid pushes a piston out driveing the brake shoes into the brake drum.

Mods? What's a mod? Bone stock, baby. Well, okay. Maybe a few smallish mods. If you count a locking gas cap, coin holder and a behind-the-seat trash bag.
Why not 'complain' about it? [I'd say "discuss" it.] That's what we're here for, and that's what the thread's about.

I know my driving skills can handle the truck. I've refined them over 34 years and thru multiple vehicles. I've had to adapt my driving habits for what I consider poor brakes on the Tacoma more than I've ever had to adapt my habits for any other vehicle.

My experience; my opinion; my voice. Here, in the thread about drum vs. disc brakes.

C'mon Chris. That's not what I said. Why so contentious? I like vehicles. I like Tacomas. I like BMWs and "Corvettes, Porshes [sic], and other sports cars", too. No crime there.

No matter what, I still think that the drum brakes on the Tacoma are sub-standard. We'll have to agree to disagree.

The point is, back in the pre-antilock days the rear drums had enough power to lock up when the truck was unloaded. Of course this was a legitimate safety hazard that has been solved. So rear drums on a truck are more than adequate.

    What are you not getting?

How much stopping power do you need in the rear of a pickup?

Why did people (pre-antilock days) used to haul around hay bales in winter?

I would also like to add that the ONLY reason that people may not like drum brakes is because they cant dissapate the heat like a disk can. Therefore they fade. Under normal driveing conditions, they work just fine. If you tend to drive aggressively, then you may be able to get them to fade. Turbonium, being familliar with performance cars, may be able to tell the difference, but 99% of the public wont get near their limit. UNLESS, they are running much larger tires, and wheels.:)

Then get a rear disc kit and you’ll be set. And I agree discs look way better.:)

So based on what Chris is saying, Its not the drum brakes that need to be replaced on the Tacoma's... It's the whole brake system that sucks..

Keep in mind that rotational mass afects brakeing FAR more than a payload does. By increaseing your tires from stocks size (wich the brakes were engineered for) to 35" tires, you are affectivley adding 1000 lbs. of payload to your truck, and to your brakes. Possibly more, but I dont want to do the math right now. So, with that in mind, are your brakes REALLY laking? For 35" tires, Im sure they are, but they were never desighned to stop that size tire. :)
