I guess I should've clarified that none of them are remotely accurate as far as their claimed temperature benefits, and they're enormously expensive for what they deliver.

They keep your bag clean, and absorb sweat before the sweat gets absorbed into your expensive down bag - but they're not exactly what I'd call "functional."

They help a small amount, in some cases. The money is better spent on insulating layers to wear to bed, IMO.

I'd buy a cheap synthetic bag rated at 50* and wear it inside my other bag (if it fits and doesn't effect loft) before I'd spend more money on a fleece liner.

yea I know what youre saying. mine was a gift so it was fo free. also I hate wearing clothes to bed. I get that tangled up feeling that seabass gets and I cant sleep. so the liner acts kinda like my insulating layer.

Soda bottle is a great idea. More volume for the weight. I was lugging around aluminum fuel bottles for alcohol (on the rare occasion I used alcohol) but I guess that wasn't really necessary.

They make stretchy bag liners. Like $30. And they stretch and move with you, so you're not trapped in an angry cocoon of death. It's the only way I can use one. It's just another layer to a system. IF it's a hair too cold for me to sleep with just merino wool long underwear and my 40* bag then a bag liner is another great later. Makes a whole lot more sense to get a $30 bag liner than it does to buy a whole separate bag for each season IF you don't camp much or only camp in one season most.

I was always too cold in my 50* bag when things turned bad and too hot in my winter bag, so I have them away and got a 40* quilt. I love it! You can vent it out in the heat like a blanket and wrap it tighter in the cold. Much more versatile and comfortable than any bag I've ever owned.

Makes more sense to buy $10 worth of fleece at a fabric store than $30+ worth of fleece at REI.

Mine is some stretchy polyester or something. I've had it forever. I can't do non-stretchy ones.

It's just so much easier to save the $$ and get the good down bag. Lots of very usable and cold weather down bags out there for $150ish if you watch the sales and closeouts.

In my experience, having more individual items to screw around with always causes frustration because it wastes time. Strive for the minimal count of items to carry, with the least amount of setup/takedown time. One bag instead of 2 or 3 layers, z-lite pad instead of inflatable, etc. etc. I'd rather be swinging in my hammock and/or fishing rather than setting up complicated campsites.

Not to mention what I believe to be a general lack of proper ground insulation for many, making a reasonable bag be woefully inefficient.

same here. i keep mine handy just in case i wake up in the middle of the night with cold feet. i'd rather get up and wrestle with the liner and get it situated that try to sleep with cold feet.

What's the strap for? That runs to the RTT from your wheel?

that's my safety line so that I don't have another "venus fly trap" incident where the wind picks up the end of the tent and it closes up with me inside.

I do the same thing with my RTT. I got caught in a wind storm once and the tent folded up on me when I wasn't inside of it. Never again with a ratchet strap from one of the eyelets down to a rim or to my sliders.

I would have thought they'd have some sort of lock out to prevent such things already built into that frame.

But I've also never seen one in real life or checked one out.

    Good to know.

you were lucky you weren't inside...its not fun...climbing out the end opposite the ladder isn't any fun either. i was afraid i'd hurt something by putting my weigh on the side with the ladder as it was vertical or a little less than so i climbed out hte opposite end and walked around to correct things.

there isn't anything to stop it from closing up. although i've had a lot less issues with wind now that the tent is on Runner. i think its the difference of the amount of space left between the vehicle and tent - the wind would howl under the tent when it was on my truck but hardly nothing now that its on the roof with only a few inches gap.
the man eating tent incident happened the first summer i had it. i was parked on a hillside, no trees or cover, and was facing the wind. i've learned to choose my campsite differently and try to orient myself so that the ladder faces away from the wind. if i can't do that then the ratchet strap comes out just in case
