Would a second gen be worth replacing a still great 1st gen?
Ive got an 04 ex cab with 145k but have really been considering a 2nd gen crew cab. I've heard the engines don't match up to the 1st ten reliability though... anyone who has owned both opinions?

More than a few second gen owners on here with several hundred thousand miles on a second gen with regular maintenance.

Get what makes you happy. Sure someone would love to buy your truck with that mileage.

Yeah looking at the mileage on some of the 2nd's it seems like their about the same, but definitely won't regret switching from a 2 to a 4 door when it happens no matter what

Definitely an increase in size, but still a small truck.

    Good luck with the hunt.

It would be worth fixing the thread title.

Find a 2001-2004 double cab, still a first gen but one with 4 doors, best of both worlds!

Yep, everyone and their mother-in-law has a 2nd gen double cab, older Tacomas are becoming less and less every day, the older double cabs are kinda rare anyway considering they were only made 4 years.

You're in the first-gen section. What kind of responses did you think you'd get? :p

Ive owned a 2004 access cab 5speed v6 trd off road, and i absolutely loved it. That exact truck saved my cousins life. Gave it to him when I got my 2011 TRD sport crew cab. Living in vermont, he slid off a road at around 60mph from black ice, went down about a 6 foot decline, and into some trees. He walked away with a small scratch on his shin. Im almost certain if he were in any other compact pickup, the results would have been much worse. As for my 2nd gen, I love it. Never had any reliability issues. Only thing is I wish it were a bit quicker getting on highways and what not.

    Cousins taco...

Personally I like the body style of the 1st gen better, but that's just me. I am starting to wish I had grabbed a double can over the ext can when I got mine last year, but I'll manage. lol

Ouch! That looks like a pretty mashed Taco, glad he was okay!

Your 2nd gen isn't very quick to get on the highways? I thought the 4.0 was pretty stout, it's definitely gotta be quicker than the 3.4 I'd think.

well i mean i got all the weight from armor and big ass tires... thats deff not helping. But I was driving my uncles stock 2015 dcsb 4.0 still didn't feel too quick. But then again these trucks aren't really meant to be fast as hell haha.

Yeah they definitely feel slow after driving something like a 5.7 Tundra or 5.0 F150. Those trucks will flat out scoot down the road when you get after them.
