Frame rust recall

I've had a lot of cars/trucks much older than my Taco that never needed the fuel door hinges lubricated. This seems to be a design problem that extends to all lines of toyotas. Would lubricating it help? Absolutely. But it's something i would think that very few owners would intuitively do.

 

Why help yourself... just point the finger and blame others...

Same reason why a good bit of people are in this thread... they don't spend $8/wk, in the winter, running their vehicle through a touchless carwash, that sprays the under carriage.

 

I can't argue with that logic!

 

Lubricating your door and hood hinges, including your fuel door, and the door striker, and hood release are all regular maintenance items that should be performed when you change the oil.


And, back to the topic...

The dealership swapped my smelly Corolla for a Rav4, I am MUCH happier, still miss my truck. You never realize how much you use a pickup until you don't have one. I talked to the service rep when I went in to swap rentals and he has no clue when the frame will be in, and he had no idea how long it usually takes to get frames in

 

I just recently got a letter in the mail about the frame rust recall. I need to get it checked out. But, Last time I changed the oil I checked the frame and it didn't look bad. But, that's my unprofessional opinion.

 

As I stated in my post. Lubricating the fuel door would have helped prevent failure. It's just not a hinge that generally comes to mind as part of overall maintenance. (unless you read this forum regularly). Rav4, Sienna's and all Toyota's with this type of fuel door seem to have a high rate of failure.

As far as the frame. I think the $25M settlement Dana corp made with Toyota speaks for itself. The frames were improperly prepared. You don't see 6 year old F150's, Dodge Dakota's, etc having the massive frame rust rot problems Toyota's have. They must just take better car of their trucks? Keep on Trolling.

if you want a truck, ask for a truck. if the dealer isn't helpful, push it up the food chain. they'll get you one if you really want one

 

" intuitively" was your post's key word... So, yes... people need to wise-up. Act accordingly to their environments...

...see salt all over your vehicle, wash it off

It's not mythical as to why these things fail and are able to be prevented. People need to help themselves more

 

I have rental properties, and of course, I didn't need to haul a ladder for a repair until a week after I dropped off my truck. When I bitched about the smelly Corolla and lack of 4wd, they went out and purchased the Rav4 at an auction, specifically for me. I can't backtrack now. I've never used a roof rack, I'm sure I can figure out some way to safely tie on a ladder.

 

Cam straps fix all roof rack problems...

Is that what you do with Toyotas because of the horrible quality, or all cars?

 

I'm meticulous to OCD levels with all my possessions... not just vehicles.

My cars, in the winter, get sprayed off by hand, twice a week... $2.50/ea. $5/car.

This week since it's below freezing and snowing continously, they'll get an automatic, touchless, $8 wash at some point.

 

I agree that everything likes lube. My truck came broken. But 400,000 mile Subaru Legacy never had a problem with the fuel door. Fuel pumps like no tomorrow, never had any problems with the door.

 

Dropped my truck off this Monday at 9:00 am and dealer called me Wednesday at 5:00 pm to tell me it was done. 3 days! Drives great and nothing fell off on the way home except for the fuel door but it's dark and cold so will wait 'till tomorrow to really check it out. Thompson Toyota in Doylestown PA does nice work.

 

I need to get my frame inspected. Debating on whether to take it to Thompson or Team Toyota in Langhorne? Thompson is closer, Team was recommended by a service manager. Visually my frame doesn't look too bad. How much scrutiny did Thompson due?

 

Morning. Took mine into Faulkner(where I bought the truck new in '07) on Old Lincoln Highway and they had it done in 3 days and been driving it for 2 weeks now with no problems. I was told they had a couple of techs that do nothing but frame replacements. When I picked my Taco up the service writer told me Toyota paid the dealership $12,200 for the job. My frame didn't look bad, but Faulkner found a hole bigger then 10mm in the frame and wrote it up. Waited 4 months for the frame and associated parts to come in then in it went for 3 days. Where ever you take it, hope it works out okay for you.
