I'm helping my brother buy his 3rd gen and he wanted to add predator steps and a roof rack but they wanted to charge him $760 for the steps and $548 for the roof rack. WTF? Aren't the steps like $500 and the roof rack $250? The dealer said it because it includes installation but this is bullshit if you ask me. Has anyone purchased these addons at cost and installed them? (While including them in the contract). Is the dealer able to sell them uninstalled?

Yes they can be sold separately.

Installation is extra money. If you don't want it, buy after the fact and install it yourself.

The dealer isn't going to sell stuff to you for the same price you can find online, they'll sell it for MSRP or near it.

Nothing new. Don't include those items in the deal if you want to save money.

I wouldn't have any issues paying MSRP if it can be rolled up into the contract but is it possible to do so without paying for installation is my question. I know we can purchase these accessories later but it's easier for most to just role it all up at once. $1,000 worth of upgrades/accessories only adds about $20 to the monthly payment

How many months is said loan? $20 times 60 months, as an example, doesn't sound like the savings he's looking for. Hopefully he'll pay extra each month to go towards principal of the loan.

I personally would not roll this into the loan if you plan on doing your own install and saving money is the goal.

Remember you have the power in this situation. If they will not do it go to a dealer that will. Tell them you want the items added to the price of the truck but you want them uninstalled. Make sure you get them upon delivery of your Tacoma, just tell them to put them in the bed of the Taco so you can get a feel for carrying stuff.
If it were my brother I would tell him to be patient save some money and buy them in a month or two off of ebay or your local classifieds. You can even look on TW. He will save a lot of money that way. I also understand that he wants them now so if he is willing to pay extra to have it right away tell the dealer to do what you want or else you walk.
    Good Luck.

I wouldn't include it. You'll pay half as much with aftermarket. My truck is on order so I've been buying accessories as I wait. I didn't get mud flaps so I went to the dealers parts department and had them order me some. He said it would be $85. I told him I could get them for $63.78 and he said he could do $65. Sold!

I've been to three dealerships in the Seattle area and have yet to see anyone asking above the MSRP for any dealer-installed accessories. But I've only seen the ones they've pre-installed and listed on the sales sheet. It might change for anything else once we get into the sales battle.

If your buying right off the lot, then I MIGHT (really big might) be able to see the installation charge, but if it is an order, then don't pay for installation. I had the Predators added on mine for the $650....really after talking them down, I got the tow pkg, tonneau cover, predators, all weather mats, and bed extender all free, and just paid MSRP on the truck itself plus the extended warranty

Here in California adding stuff to the sale also adds to your yearly registration so you keep paying for it year after year along with the finance charges. Not much but it is there.

Bought Rack and Predators after and installed myself. Super easy and cost me $550 for both!

Wrong mentality when you start considering how much it adds to the monthly payment...Either buy it separately and install it yourself, make them eat the cost, or find someone that will.

I got running boards and the front bed rail put on mine. The dealer price matched what I could get them for online and included installation

Complains about dealer wanting them to add $1k in accessories into a loan for a $35k truck.

Then complains about not being able to buy the same parts after the loan is written because it's cheaper to spend $20 more a month and have the $1k added to the loan.

So.. complains about spending $20 a month more in his loan while saying that's what he wants to do. Doesn't have the money to spend $500 cash for parts but is trying to buy a new truck.

Does anything make sense in this thread?

Not really. Tacking on an extra $20 every month is going to end up costing more than the 1k in accessories unless he gets 0% rate. I doubt he will so he's going to spend more than he bargains for. I'd say, don't get the extra parts. Put $20 aside yourself every month until you get the $500 to buy it yourself.

If you are financing, don't buy accessories from the dealer and add it in to the cost of the truck. You are then paying interest on the accessories!

Unsolicited advice.....if you can't afford the accessories after financing the truck, I would think twice about how much you are spending on your vehicle in the first place and look at something more affordable.

    But oh well.....'merica

I would pay for the roof rack install that way it will be covered under warranty if it leaks. The steps he can find better aftermarket and they are fairly easy to install. He can negotiate on the cost, they have some wiggle room on those prices, but if they dont, another dealer will. Or try getting online and negotiate with the Internet Sales department, they usually can do better for some reason.

No kidding. Dealers LOVE "payment buyers"

"oh it's just another $20 a month,..surely you can afford that!"

    To answer the OP's question:

YES THEY ARE RIPPING YOU OFF ROLLING FULL MSRP ACCESSORIES INTO THE LOAN....(and laughing about it) :kona:

But who can blame them with today's "educated" buyers

So true. They will eventually make a deal with someone who will to pay the hefty price, they do it all day long so no need to drop the price. We as buyers control this though. If the masses are fine with over paying, and we are because the majority do, there's no reason for them to go under MSRP on aftermarket components. Like any business they are in it for the money.
