Is it possible to put subwoofers in the back of my truck?

Hello, im completely new here. I have a '99 access cab Tacoma. I recently just bought this truck from California and I've noticed that the speakers aren't all that great. In the back on the sides, there is these protector panels that protect the speakers. I don't know much about speakers and i was wondering if I could take off those panels, take out the speakers that were in there, and replace with with subwoofers or a speaker with great bass. I would replace the door speakers also, but not subwoofers. I would like to put the subwoofers in there because I usually have a couple friends in it and I don't want to get rid of the backseat. Also, if this possible, could I do it myself? And, right now the truck still has the standard stereo. Would I have to replace that? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Those panels will come off, but I wouldn't put subs in there. You'll lose the quality of sound of your mids and highs if you don't have any speakers in the back. So definitely put some regular speakers in those spots. The trouble with access cabs is they are very limited on places to put a sub if you are trying to conserve space.

So say I wanted to do your set up, the sub, 2 new speakers in the back panels and the 2 amps, how much would that cost? As I said Im completely new, so why do you have to have amps for the sub?

sub would need an amp. panel speakers just get replaced. You don't need a new stereo but it does improve sound quality.

 

So do I need an amp for a sub? Also, in your video you show the sub behind the center console, do have another sub on the side you can't see? What are tweeters? I've been looking at some videos so are they just a small speaker? Sorry im asking a bunch of questions.

 

tweeters are a small speaker for your highs. you don't have to have them. I personally don't in my current truck, but I put some in in my old car.

Anyways, my recommendation for you is to first buy a new HU. A new HU is such a great upgrade from the stock. Increases your volume, quality, clarity, etc. And it allows you to set your own EQ to exactly how you want it so sound.

Then I would suggest replacing your 4 speakers. You don't need to amp them, especially if you have a new HU. Replacing the back speakers is easy as pie, but the door ones are a little more difficult because you have to remove the door panels to get to the speakers. (at least you do in my '98)

After you have a decent head unit and speakers, then you can focus on setting up a sub. Although, having a sub in an access cab would require you to build your own box or have someone build it for you. If you have a sub, you have to amp it and install all the wiring, which can take a good amount of time the first time you do it. The cost of a sub+box+amp+wiring adds up pretty quickly.

That's the route that I always recommend people to take. Or you can go crazy and get all that stuff at once

 

Thanks so much! I had the wrong mind set. This makes MUCH more sense. Hopefully by the time I start replacing stuff I'll learn more about audio. Also, anybody have tips on replacing all the speakers? Like, do you have a set of speakers that work really well with medium levels of volume? Also anyone have a recommendation for a new HU in a '99 Access cab? (An HU is just the stereo panel right? And yes, I know nothing lol.)

 

The dash looks exactly the same as mine. Looks like you changed some things: Used up the space below stereo and got rid of ash tray. Thanks for all the help, this has really helped me out and I give you a big thanks! Does your HU work pretty good?

Pioneer and Alpine make very solid headunits, so look for one of those that's in your price range.
