Maybe we don't do a good enough job in the trip reports explaining that at some point EVERYONE, even @thefatkid with his chains, had to get a tug. Granted we may have tried things that we wouldn't have tried if we were alone but I've seen enough people get into situations on "easy" trails that I don't plan to go on much more than a fire road without at least one other truck.

I've spent plenty of time wheeling alone, and I think doing so is just fine as long as you're prepared. I've got myself out of quite a few precarious positions, but not saying that will always be the case. Going with someone else is preferable, but it isn't necessary.

Littles, I see a high lift there. Was there no chance of using it as a come along to pull yourself up?

Thought of that. I used that method the other day to get outta some shit. I have a strap, but its not long enough to reach anybody the trees where I'm stuck

I thought that same thing but without at a minimum 2 straps or some chain the hi lift as a come along wouldn't work, plenty of trees to anchor to though

A set of max trax would have gone along way too. I had height to get one under tire, but all I had was rocks and they kept kicking out as I'd slide over. The only other thing I could think of was to jack the front end and slide rocks under the tire, but with angle I couldn't get on the sliders without smashing the body with the jack. At on point I started to jack up the front bumper but that looked like it was going to roll it too.

Fair enough. A winch and other recovery gear certainly make it more reasonable. You also have to accept the fact that what might have been 10 minutes and a laugh with friends could easily turn into hours of manual labor or even some impromptu hiking/camping.
I'd say @Littles is pretty damn fortunate he was in cell range.

Haha. All things considered yea I'm damn lucky. I'd be really screwed without service. And the good people of Colorado.

    You guys are life savers.

This kind of stuff if the first equipment I would invest in. It's invaluable to have a various assortment of straps, shackles, and chains. I've got over 100' of straps, and I've used them together on more than one occasion.

    x2 to all these points.

I've spent hours shoveling before when a minute getting pulled out with a strap would get me out just the same. Also, I've always thought about having something like a satellite phone or notification device if things really get bad. That is one big plug to you guys with your HAM setups.

Consider a PLB or Spot/DeLorme type service if you go off on your own a lot I do on my dirt/dual sport motorcycles. The DeLorme is nice, it allows short 48? character two way texting but the annual plan is kinda pricey for what you get. I had a Spot for a long time and it works great too, but you have to have your help contacts setup beforehand the spot just spams a pre-configured message to a preset list of cell numbers (texting) or e-mail addresses. The annual plan gets annoying. It works well in practice you just have to set it up before though. Spot has a device (Spot Connect) that allows 1-way texting; not sure if it's too preset contacts or not.

I'll probably be getting a McMurdo PLB which is nice (no annual fee) but it doesn't have a "I just need help" button like the DeLorme or Spots do. It's an all-or-nothing SAR/SOS response.

All points well made. Clearly I need some more recovery gear and some common sense. I got by with what I had in PA, and mostly ran with groups. This snow out here is no joke.

The other bonus to having cell service is you get to experience all of us preaching to you about what you did wrong before you've even been rescued! :D

We're going to need you to roll down your windows and play "flight of the valkyries" at full volume on your way up.
