02 Tacoma, fixed with curse words.

That's what we get for owning a toyota i guess. The pax side rear frame rail is perfect and rust free except for one spot at the bottom of the horn where it meets the perch. Buy a welder and start plateing LOL. IF you click on my build in my sig you can see the holes.

Some of this Some of that
If toyota says its out of coverage, thats that. Find out the exact dates that they base this off of and make sure they are in the right. leaf spring hangers is a pretty common spot for rust to start, inspect the rest of the frame for rot.. If a couple frame patches get you through some years youd be in decent shape

I've got the same problem. My truck originally came from TX and the frame's always looked great but while replacing a censor on the exhaust I found a hole in the frame. I've emailed Toyota customer service to see what can be done about it, but haven't gotten a response just yet. (It's only been a day). May have to just weld and fix it as best as I can. :notsure:

Toyota should fix this. I don't know how many times I got up at 5:00 am and drove an
ugly junk truck to work in the hopes of buying a good looking practical Toyota someday. I
got my first loan to buy mine and the frame broke while I still owed 5 grand on it. I'll
bet they didn't advertise that the frame would rust in half when they were listing the
reasons why we should buy one --which is proof they should fix it. The thing has 100,000
miles on it and it should never be a possibility for the frame to ever do that! I should
kamikaze this thing right through the plant in Texas. No one will accept responsibility for
this and they shouldn't be allowed to be sold if there isn't an official recall. I have no
car and no way to get to work!
    WE WANT OUR TRUCKS FIXED!
This is the "Rust Treatment' lawsuit!
    Shame on you Toyota!

the frame is like 8-10 grand (depending where they have to send it) so they are going to save money any way they can. The original owner probably got the letter and then decided to sell it and never took care of it. And if Toyota would have already sent a letter then a second one probably went to the original owner as well.

the TSB was for trucks "purchased" in cold-climate states (north of the "salt-belt") so yours would not be covered under the notice.

Toyota did make an effort to "fix this" as all other vehicle manufacturers do the same thing. Letters were sent to the owners (I received two).

also mileage means nothing if it sits in places where rust can happen and not properly cared for. there were plenty of sub-100k trucks that got bought back or crushed due to rust.

oh and welcome to TW, next post you may not want to have a rant :D

I spent 3 months checking with different dealers and eventually the corporate customer service on the phone. In my case the previous owner did not have the required inspections done so the warranty is void. Otherwise i would still have the better part of a year remaining. They would not budge. The corprate customer service folks offered a discount on new Tacoma but would do nothing for my 01. I can get you the 800# if you want or you can get it from your local dealer.

The original buy back at 1.5x KBB regardless of condition, and then the extended 15 year warranty, and then the free frame replacement was them fixing it.....

To me that was far and beyond what most manufactures would do.

Lets all keep after them to fix everything so prices can get to $75,000.00 for a new Tacoma.

Then maybe Toyota just says that is it pulls the plug on American Operations !!

I've heard conflicting info on this, which is one reason I sent them the email. I bought the truck from a fairly large Toyota dealer in WV. Who knows, we'll just see if they get back to me and what they have to say.

The only thing that you can really fault Toyota on is that this should have been a full recall as some frames were actually breaking in half which makes it a safety issue. If a full recall had been done it would have made the news and pretty much everyone would have been aware of it. but of course it would likely have effected their sales of new Tacomas. Remember while the extended warranty and the frame replacements as well as the buybacks are commendable they wouldn't have been necessary if Toyota had been more diligent in their quality control and nothing has changed the 2nd gens and some Tundras are also having frame rust issues. I just know that once I have driven my current Tacoma into the ground I won't be buying another Toyota product.

you could always try a petition to the government to force toyota to extend the rust issue to say 20 years

    though I don't know how you'll get 100k sigs in 30 days.

As a consumer, buying power and willingness to buy from 'the other guy' is the most powerful tool we have. If you feel Toyota has not provided you with the goods and level of service you desire then by all means go elsewhere. With that said, all, and I do mean ALL, auto manufactures have their issues. Even though I got the sh*tty end of the stick on this one and need to deal with a rotten frame, I think Toyota did more than most other manufactures would have in the same situation. As a responsible vehicle owner I should and do take the time to stay informed on what issues I need to watch for, then inspect and maintain the vehicle accordingly. Only if the previous owner had done the same... In my case I accept fault because I did not take the time to insure this truck was still covered prior to buying it. For those of you that bought a Tacoma and didn't take the time to have the frame inspected and maintained, that is your own fault. It sucks but such is life. Be an informed consumer or accept the risk, your choice.

We are talking about a 15 year old truck with almost a quarter million miles on it right?

At what point do people stop blaming Toyota and realize that their trucks are 15 years old and have a quarter millions on them and at some point shit goes wrong.

Like when the frames were made by an outside company contracted by Toyota? And Toyota goes above and beyond what they could have done to by paying out 1.5x the excellent KBB value regardless of actual condition

What do you want a frigin lifetime frame warranty? At what point does the frame rust issue liability die, 15 years, 20 years, half a century.

Have to draw the line in the sand somewhere. I mean shit, 15 years and one single hole, it isnt the end of the world.
