Glad to hear you are happy with the Bak Flip. Is it watertight even after a storm? Can keep suitcases dry? Any experience with the BakFlip with the ladder rails?

I haven't had any issues after heavy rain while parked or while traveling with backpacks, sleeping bags, etc. They use a drain hose system to carry out any excess water.

I love how it looks too. I have even been stopped by a complete stranger while driving, who wanted to know more about it. He wanted one for his Tacoma after seeing mine. Said it was the best he had ever seen.

I haven't used ladder rails. Sorry.

Per the owners manual, you need to open the tailgate in order to open the cover (e.g. Tonneau cover is secured)
    ■ Open the tonneau cover

    1. 1 Open the tailgate. (P. 116)

    2. 2 Pull the lever and lift to open the rear tonneau cover.

Look at this one today (Bak Flip) at their Web site.
Why wouldn't last year model not fit Tacoma 2016.
Did bed dimension change - same rail system as 14 and 15 models. Wonder how long before available for my TRD 2016 Sport. Thanks for info - definitely
    think is best cover.

I had planned to take the cover off my '12 to use on the '16, as they originally had the same model # listed for those years when I looked a few weeks ago, but they since removed the 2016 option. I asked their customer service and they said there were some changes to the '16 that require them to make changes on their end too. So much for me saving a few $.

I have cover on 2014 from Toyota accessories. Uses spring clamps to hold on too rail..Bet it will fit 2016 when it arrives in couple of days I hope. It does not have the ability to fold up to have use of total bed. Paid close to $800 and still works well - but never was totally rain proof. It is thick and bulky but works well despite buying 5 years ago and has fit 2012 and 2014 model.

The rails are the same basically, however they are still at the same height to the bottom of the box I believe, while the box got higher. So there is more distance between the top of the box and the rails. It will make most older covers not fit.

ok that explains why BakFlip will not fit - my present cover will still fit - it uses spring clamps so unless rail is 3 inches father from cover - mine will still fit -- can use it till BakFlip sells new version to fit 2016. Thanks

Just as an aside, MythBusters did a show on the effect of a full bed cover in regards to MPG. It makes Zero difference.

After years of loyal service I sold my 2000 4Runner so that I could go all in on a 2016 Taco! I know that it usually makes sense to buy any truck accessories aftermarket, but I'm not so sure with the tonneau cover. I scoped out a buddy's F-150 today with a BAKFlip and it looked legit! I checked online for a 2015 Taco and the starting price is $748. I know there are other covers, but are there any good ones for around the $650 price range? If not it looks like the factory tonneau cover is the move, or am I missing something here? :notsure:

See if Fold a cover has the 2016 ones out yet. I'm going to get one for my 2014 in December. I like the reviews and quality and functionality.

No cheap, but you get what you pay for. There is a sub forums for the covers here.

FWIW, I finally saw one of these in person yesterday. Looks OK but told my dealer a week ago that I no longer wanted the cover

That factory cover is not too short, the gaskets are not setup properly. Poorly designed.

Now, let me ease your minds about having to open the tailgate to open the cover. That is exactly what you want. I have had a cover on my sport trac for the past 12 years. The cover locks into place and then you shut your tailgate and lock that. Then, nobody can get inside.

anybody have the part number for this factory tonneau cover?

If you look at this picture...

    and this picture...

..you can see the rear corners sticking up. In the top pic it almost looks like you could see down into the bed. Looks crappy IMO. I have been trying to get a tacoma allocated to me with a cover which is slowing down my receiving of the truck.

Just wondering if this sticking up is normal and not and installation error or what is going on. I don't want to get this OEM cover if it is sticking op like that.

Going against all that TW seems to stand for can we please just address the specific question I have and not debate pro/cons of covers or talk about aftermarket options. I'll cross that bridge later.
    Thanks[/QUOTE]

I saw a sport at a dealer with the cover. Honestly, the cover looked pretty terrible. Bad fit and just one of the uglier covers that I have come across. I talked to the parts guy who said that Toyota stopped shipping them but he didn't know why. I suspect it was a customer satisfaction issue. I know I would have been pretty upset if mine came with one.

So I tried my extang trifold from my 2013 on my new 2016 and guess what... DOES NOT FIT. I was pissed cause the bed dimensions are the same. There are minor differences like the rail at the front of the bed is different and of course the tailgate. I got it to fit but I had to remove the rail and adjust the latches on the tonneau. Its still a poor fit and won't be weather tight at the front (where the bed meets the cab). So to anyone hoping they can port their cover be aware!

I got the tonneau cover OEM with my '16 purchase. Granted, I didn't exactly want it and wouldn't have opted to have it if possible, but I decided what the heck and went with it.
I actually really like it. It locks itself so you cannot access the bed unless you drop the tail gate. So it can potentially completely enclose and lock the entire bed of the truck. The corners do stick up and there's a minor amount of "play" about them. It's insanely easy to remove, there is a squeeze release on the drivers side. One squeeze release to unlock 1/3, a second to unlock 2/3 and then a bolt located on the passenger size that needs to be removed, followed by the final squeeze lever on the drivers size to completely remove the cover. It has storage straps to keep everything together while you remove it. It's about 100# or so and sort of an awkward grab but it's manageable for a 5'5 lady.

I like the idea of it because I do transport things in the bed of my truck and it makes it easier for me to not have to remove everything if I plan on going out and want to lock everything up.
Can take pics if anyone has any more questions.

It is normal for the 2 rear corners to stick up. The latch in the back has 2 positions, the first one looks a little loose and allows the corners to stick up a little but if you push down hard enough to compress the gasket over the latches you will hear a second click. The second click position seems to be more secure and the corners do not stick up in that position.

Good to know. Does anyone have any experience with how weather-proof the factor cover is? Up here in Canada we gotta keep the snow and rain out ....
