As to why it's so hard to come off. I believe the engine when it's assemble at the factory it's cold, and the rubber gasket was lube. Now after a few thousand miles the gasket material has fused itself to the metal surface because of the oil on the gasket has dissipated, and the medal filter has expanded against the engine block. I've always use only two fingers and my thumb, so I don't over tighten the new oil filter. That oil wrench is great, but I've had problems with the spring tensioner popping off. Ended up putting some caulk adhesive around the spring clip to keep it in place. Do like to put in about 8 to 12 ounces of oil in the filter, so it's not dry when I startup the motor for the first time.

I use my belt. The last change, the wife had to keep tension on the belt while I broke it free by hand. It really snugs down for whatever reason.

12 oil changes on my 2009, all by me. Only the first was a problem - since then filter removal/install is by hand, no tools required. My theory is oil filter gasket was NOT lubed when engine was built. Also guess engine is built in one plant, shipped to a separate plant for vehicle assembly, and engine doesn't get ANY fluids until the truck rolls off the production line.

My filter is a bitch every time. Had to use a rubber strap wrench last oil change. And I only ever hand tighten when I change my oil with OEM filters.

My crush washer for the oil drain plug also seems to have fused to the oil pan lol.

The only reason you lube the oil filter gasket. Is to keep you from getting a false feeling of the filter being prematurely tight. The manufacturer when assembling engines ether apply pressure to the oil ports or prerun the oil pump to lube the internal parts. http://www.autoserviceprofessional....ing-a-critical-procedure-for-any-fresh-engine

I have a feeling this is somehow going to warp into a 'best oil' thread... :spy:

I get mine tight by hand when I change the oil, but when I go to take it off 6000 miles later I use these to get it off:

Thank god i got toyota care for the first 25k on my 15. I used to dread getting the filter off my 06. They put it an angle so almost impossible to get a grip on. Then no matter what filter i used if you tried going 5k+ miles on synthetic good luck getting it off. I will be getting one of these filter sockets right away i'm not looking forward to this again.By the way when i bought my 15 i asked about changing the filter in a 16. The guy said its even more of a pain.

Hey @DoorDing, where can I buy one of those?

I have a Cambodian Tire, HH, and Car Quest in my town. Everything else is 30 minutes away in Belleville.

I tried that route, ended up crushing the oil casing. Then tried it with a oil chain wrench, it was messy and had very little room to work in. That Lisle 63600 oil filter wrench is the way to go, along with an oil drain valve!

I've got a whole collection of filter removal devices.
Best one I found for tacoma filters is a cap filter wrench, 73 mm, 14 flutes. Advanced auto or any auto store has a rack of various sizes.
Fits a little snug, I use a short extension, and zip it right off.

I am going to have to add one of those lisles to the collection now though. :D
