This is totally my style!! I like the idea of recovery, but i don't like most of the aftermarket bumbers, their weight, or having to modify the suspension to accommodate that weight. This seems like the perfect compromise!! I wanted something like this for the fj I had but never got around to it and the tacoma has other priorities at the moment. Awesome idea!

 

Thanks jbandt, I know there are lots of options out there for bolt on recovery winch plates but this works best for me. Remember, any substantial weight you add to the front of the vehicle will of course affect the handling. For example my 2.5" lift with the adjustable Bilsteins will soon have to be rebuilt by replacing stock coils with OME 2881 coils. After 226K and 6 months of having the winch on the front they are starting to sag a little, maybe 1/2"...

How much does it weigh, in total?

 

I'll have to put the assembly on a scale to check, in lieu of actually doing that my best guesstimate is a 100lbs (give or take). Weight would be substantially less with synthetic line, somewhere in the neighborhood of 15lbs from what I've read.

 

What would it cost to build me one? I might give it a try. I like the idea. Might pay for itself from one deer hit. I average about one a year in these parts. That front bumper is nothing more than "looks" anyway.
What about free-spool? Looks like if you rotated the end gear housing 90 deg. to the front you might be able to fashion a handle to access it from the front.

 

Everything is accessible from the front, if you follow the link to the extra pics in the specs area you see how it's mounted. As for cost to build, it all depends on what you have access to. Raw metal is fairly inexpensive ($50-$100), figuring out the bolt pattern, welder, cutting tools, drills, etc. is what makes it costly. I haven't done a write-up on designing one and don't plan to, but here is a that might help if you wanted to build one yourself. I strongly considered this style but wanted to preserve as much approach angle as possible. In regards to "deer protection" this winch plate replaces the lower cross member on the front of your truck so unless the dear decides to jump up from under your truck at a 45 degree angle there is really no added benefit.

I would like that mounting spot just to have a 2" hitch positioned up like that. Don't have use for a winch but would like to be able to move by boat around with a front hitch. I don't like the crop of hitches that bolt below the bumper.

 

assuming without looking at that price point the winch is included?

 

I should have a couple built by the end of this week or next for those of you who were serious. These will be bare metal and priced at $260. I'll post some pics when completed and you can send me pm's accordingly! Let's get a few of these out there and get more people winching!

With this design there isn't enough support for a centered receiver, but I'm sure I could put something together that would eliminate the winch option and have a receiver only in its place, send me a pm

This is a winch mount only, designed to allow someone on a budget, or a person (like me) who likes more of a stock look to install a winch on the front of their truck for under $600-650. But feel free to weigh in at the poll at the beginning of the post

 

Im having some trouble looking at the how its on the truck is it bolted or welded and obviously theres cutting of the bumper but what of other brackets do they have to be cut also,

 

Directly behind the plastic shell (aka bumper) there is a metal reinforced bumper which is replaced by the winch bracket. 2x2 extensions bolt to underside of the frame incorporating the tow hooks and also the face of the frame where the metal reinforced bumper was previously bolted.

 

This is something I would be interested in.

 

Where did this end up. What's the status? I'm interested.
