Annoying whistle from 40-60 MPH where to look?

Has any one else had this come up? All of a sudden my truck has starting whistling from about 40 to 60MPH and it is becoming extremely annoying. This is not the normal howl I get when I'm driving in extreme cross winds this is all the time from 40 to 60. I have looked for out of place trim and have not really found anything.

Any recommendations on where to look next? Thanks!

 

is a whistle like a teakettle just starting to let you know that the water is boiling in it?

If so its the seal at the very top of your grill at the center of the truck that meets the hood. Run a 1/4in piece of dripper pipe through the seal and it will go away.

 

Yes that is the sound. Dumb question but what is dripper pipe and by 1/4" is that the O.D. of the pipe? Thanks.

 

They sell it at Home Depot, lowes, and just about every other hardware store. It's clear vinyl tubing. You'll want to get a little more than 5 feet. A foot for above each headlight and 3 feet for across the front. It's much easier to install the front tube if you lube it up with some spit or wd40. I haven't heard that noise since.

 

dripper pipe, stuff for small irrigation around the house. 1/4in outer diameter. I used this vs the clear vinyl tubing as you can get the dripper pipe in black!

 

I'm getting this whistle at appr 75 mph, is this the speed you got that noise? I've taped the sides and top of windshield seals to check if it's from there but still got the noise. I've gotta check the grill area you're talking about.

 

probably depends on model.... when i had it on mine before the piece of dripper pipe was inserted in the center 3 foot section above the grill, it would do at at any speed above 40mph.

FYI there is a TSB for this, wherein they put a new grill or grill seal on the truck.... but 2 dollars for a dripper pipe and 3 minutes of your time to do it yourself is much easier IMO.

 

Do you have an OEM or aftermarket roof rack? My OEM rack whistles if I have my bars going the width of the truck. If I have them locked in position with the length of the truck I get no noise.

 

Its the antenna. get an aftermarket shorty. At least mine was. I tried everything including the tubing in the hood gasket seal, taping off the windshield, etc. Even had the grill replaced under warranty. I took off my antenna for a auto car wash one day and didnt put it back on right away and noticed the whistle was no longer there...
